Jungle Hunt

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

I recently took one of my XEGS's to work and a few of the guys in the office have taken some interest in it. The popular game of the moment is Jungle Hunt (my boss has the current high score). Yeah, I know it sounds crazy to have an Atari at work, but our work is tedious and wait-time intensive so sometimes we need breaks!

The version I have on cart (XE style with silver label) shows Atari AND Taito copyrights on the main screen. However, the only filed versions of this proggy I can find have only Taito copyrights. The ROM version on AtariMania, btw appears to be the same as the one I have on cartridge.

Even more interesting is that, every cracked version of this rom I have found so far (from the usual places) seems to have a sound problem with the third screen (boulders). Check it out, if you don't believe me. The third screen sounds like white noise -- no sound effects. All others are ok.

I'm a little curious about this because, as I know some crackers often modified the in-game text of their exploits, the removal of Atari's copyright seems a little odd, given that the Taito one remains. Was the common crack of this a different version than the cart release? Was there more than one release of this game? Was the fully working version of this rom ever converted to file. Any ideas? I had the game on cart back in the 80s, so I don't think I ever looked closely at the release(s) I obtained over BBSs.

I also have an XEGS at work for game breaks... Oddly, I love Jungle Hunt and have the cart, but it's one of the only ones I don't have here to play. I'll have to bring it in.

Currently, the #1 game by far is Yoomp.

Don't want to change topics here, but have you noticed that when you load Yoomp! without the keyboard attached, it doesn't seem to work? The guys here are more interested in the cartridges I have -- Yoomp! is on a my-ide cart, and works great, but no one really pays any attention to it (except me).

Still curious about why there was never a good release of Jungle Hunt (filed).

Yeah, I keep meaning to do that. I noticed that Jungle Hunt was featured in the HSC some time ago, but no one mentioned the sound issues.

Yeah - Yoomp needs the keyboard to operate past the title screen. I noticed that too. Doubt they tested the game on an XEGS :)

I bet the original file version of Jungle Hunt was based on an almost-finished prototype that got leaked (reviewer's copy, or disgruntled employee, whatever). Later file versions are probably identical game code, with different intros.

It'd be interesting to see commented disassemblies of the file and cart versions, with differences highlighted...

Was JH initially one of the 5200 only releases?

Often file versions of games end up losing some game functionality because the cracker inadvertantly remove something from the code that also is relevant to the game as well as writing to the ROM address space.

Pretty sure my old file version on floppy has sound issues - that's part of the price we used to pay for dodgy pirated software.

I'm just gonna have to dig this one out for a quick go, has been a while... thought the white noise was the sound of the cooking pot or the stream on the boulder level... maybe there is no stream and it's a red hill... hmm... nice game though and yoomp too, am sure they'd get voted to be played.

The Vjietnam archive one is 1982 Taito, no white noise on boulders on the emulator though.

May as well dump the later one if it's different.

For me, the one from vjetnam did not have the white noise during the boulder stage -- it had no sounds at all. Strange. It'd be nice to have a good dump of this that would run from the HDD. It's nothing I know how to do, however.

Check that. The one from vjetnam didn't have any white noise when emulated. On real hardware, however, the static was back. Must be the same as other versions floating around.
