nathanallan #1 Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) Things didn't really go as planned but I have to tell what did happen. A friend and I decided to go to Best Buy and see how the two consoles stacked up against each other on the most expensive television I could find, which was $4000 near the end of one of the aisles. The TV was a 1080p 60-something inch screen, had all the inputs on the right side. The Genesis didn't work, but I had the wrong power supply, not enough voltage Also, genius me forgot entirely the SNES to hook it up. I did this in three videos, and intended to post them but since I botched the whole thing I didn't post it up. The oddest thing was, nobody said anything to us the entire time. I walked in with a walmart bag full of game stuff, nobody greeted us, nobody asked us if we needed any help. Most impressively, nobody challenged us as we left the store WITH A BAG FULL OF STUFF. Even now I am shocked at what didn't happen, and how people totally ignored us. I do intend to try again, make a successful video and successfully test the two consoles against each other, at Best Buy, on a 1080p screen. Hopefully someone will notice us when we go back. Seriously, not a word, and there were people ALL around, customers, employees, a busy night. Not a word I even commented, "Are we invisible? Why don't we just get naked and sling Genesis controllers around our heads?" Had to share. Nathan Edited March 25, 2009 by nathanallan

Nathan I did something similar. I brought my Nomad (uses batteries) with me to check out the monitors using composite inputs. You can really tell which TVs ar ebetter at up-scanning the signal this way. I did this at Costco, Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart and Best Buy. No one ever asked me any questions either. -Lee

Anyhow, hope your next expe4riance goes better, and now, I wanna do that at walmart (and Id probably get mugged going in, or certainly going out) Hey, what are you doing? Trying this game on this TV. nathanallan #10 Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) I don't know when I'll get a chance to get back there, but thanks for the support and comments! It was like, 8pm, so I am guessing they didn't want to mess with either one of us. I ought to show pics of myself and my friend on an average day. I'll only speak for me-- I look like something from a video game most days. "Nuff said. That power supply is one of those three in ones, supposedly powering NES/SNES and Genesis, but at 850mA, it will NOT power a Genesis, only the NES/SNES. I fyou need one for a Genny, skip it. shadow460 #11 Posted March 26, 2009 I used to do that kind of thing all the time with musical gear at Guitar Center. I'd hook up my instruments to their amps, hook up a recorder to the keyboard outputs and actually record songs that way, etc. I've done it in pawn shops, too. Guitar Center will take down the serial # on your instrument and check it again when you leave. That's it. The pawn shops could care less, and neither of them makes you check the recorder at the door. A friend of mine went into Wal*Mart with me and put a VB script on one of the computers that popped up every time the machine was started. It said something like "Have a nice day!". He thought about making so it could not be closed, but decided against that. I've also jacked save files off the DC at Game X Change. They weren't happy about that one. I go in there all the time, though, so it was quickly forgotten. As soon as it was, I brought my VMU back in and uploaded my Crazy Taxi save file into their system. They laughed about it. I know the manager there, so I could probably get away with murder in that store. Then there was the time I set up my 7800 in the Yukon Game X change, and we all played Atari for about half an hour. Even the manager got in on it. That's, like, way against company policy for the employees to be playing games, but no one cared. We justified it by "testing" a 7800 they had in the store. Then we set up mine so we could "compare the test results". Their 7800 worked.
hex65000 #12 Posted March 26, 2009 Hehe! That was pretty fun. A few thoughts... The .85A brick was typically geared for the Genesis 2. I also think they did reverse the polarity (from memory) on those units too. So it's possible you did apply reverse voltage to your Genesis 1. Do a dry run setup at home before venturing out. IE: check your cabling/game/etc on a known working TV. It's much easier to troubleshoot from home v/s the store. Don't bother with the controllers if the goal is to compare video quality. Just select a game or 2 with interesting 'attract modes' and just use that aspect. This also means you have one less thing to carry. Also you can determine ahead of time if the game really needs to see a controller in order to function correctly. The PSx/N64 platforms tended to care, the SNES & Genny ehhhh... not so much I think. In a way not being paid attention to by the 'crack(ed)' staff is an ideal situation -- don't complain. It's like asking "What could possibly go wrong?" That's it. Hex.
