DaytonaUSA #1 Posted March 26, 2009 I need your help. I have a really good deal on a PipPin system, and a really good deal on a Neo Geo CD. Which should I get? The PipPin is really cool.. but software is a pain to find on it, the Neo Geo isn't as "odd" (I like oddball systems) but has software readily available on it. Lemme know quickly! Really depends if you like 1- on -1 fighting games? The Neo seems to have little else readily available, I don't so sold mine after a few weeks, it's also big, and loads slowly and feels very cheaply made. I don't know much about the Pipin apart from it was based on a Mac PPC 603 right? As far as quirky goes the Pippin has the win in my book!

Bungie.net has the precursers to Halo, Marathon 1, 2 and 3, that were on the pippin for free on download. But im not 100% sure if i burn these to a cd, if the pippin will recognize it.. STGuy1040 #5 Posted March 26, 2009 I forgot to mention that SNK's classic Neo-Geo library is also available on the Neo-Geo CD (i.e. Magician Lord, Baseball Stars 1 & 2, Nam 75, etc) so these are worth the purchase of a Neo-Geo CD system alone.

Don't know if they will work or not, but I had a Powermac 6200(603 75Mhz CPU, 48mb RAM) back when they were new and they struggled to achieve any kind of frame rate, if the pippin is ased on similar hardware that i suspect it is them, good Luck! BSA Starfire #7 Posted March 26, 2009 OK I just looked at the Wiki entry for Pippin, what a funky looking system! love the Pad, but Yep it's based on a 603 66mhz cpu(Slower than any 603 mac used) & only has 5 mb RAM using sys 7.5. marathon2 is going to be tedious unless the Pippin version was heavily optimized or the Pippin had a damn impressive video accelerator that wasn't used in the 603 mac's. It had games made for it though, just like a playstation or saturn.. just more like a 3DO in popularity haha. games are VERY hard to come by but again, some places let you dload their old games for free, like Bungie's Haloish game, Marathon. I'm hoping I can get that to work on it >_> Btw, I bought the Pippin for a dang good price, and it came with the box, all the baggies, packaging ect. After I told him I was afraid I might not get anything to work on it, and that I coudlnt' find any retail games for sale anywhere, he threw in his only game, a Tamogachi game, for free . The system is in mint condition.. not faded at all. I can't wait to play with it as the controller is very interesting. Trackball in gaming pad??? BRILLIANT! haha. I'll let everyone know if I can get Bungie's Marathon dload to work on it. If so, this thing is already well worth the money. 98PaceCar #9 Posted March 26, 2009 If it's a US pippin (@World and not @Mark), it's pretty rare and much harder to get than the Neo CD. Where did you find Marathon for download? I found all of the open source stuff, but not that. I do have a couple of backups that seem to work and was able to burn a copy of a proto browser and have it work on mine, so it is possible. Don't think it required any special settings to do, just a standard burn.
DaytonaUSA #10 Posted March 26, 2009 (edited) Here is a pic of the game I'm getting. I've never seen a retial game for this before, so this is a HUGE deal for me, even if the game might not be much to talk about. It's called Tamogachi Greetings: Edited March 26, 2009 by DaytonaUSA

The URL is at my home machine.. I'll paste it here when I get home. But you should be able to go on bungie.net and find it there. There's a dedicated page for it somewhere in that site. Btw, since I'm providing you this, can you let me know where to get the open source stuff you have already find, wink wink?? I'd be your best friend lol. Been a lot of years Anyhow the pippin looks really cool, hope to see lots of updates on it here, I love old mac's still have a 540c, G3 powerbook 250mhz, 6500/275 & LC. All bought new, shudder to think of the cost now! I have been using Mac's since the 512K Plus, wouldn't have anything else!

Yeah, Marathon Infinity was a bit more intensive, but IIRC it still ran pretty well on a 68040. The requirements on my "Bungie Mac Action Sack" says 68040. Maybe I'll pull out the 950 later and give it a good test. Some of the original PowerMac's were pretty crippled and didn't run much better than the 68040's. Combine that with having to translate all the 68k code in the OS and other software and that made the situation worse. I've been using Mac's since the IIsi... almost as long as you! If you like old Mac's you should check out my computer collection link in my sig! I think I have one or two of them...

I'm not familiar with the PipPin so I can't offer any advice there. The CDZ didn't have a 2x drive, it had more cache. Both the CDZ and front loader were only available in Japan. As for the CDZ being much more durable... they were prone to overheating. I think it's pretty safe to say that the top-loader is the safest bet. (Plus it's ridiculously easy to region mod)

DaytonaUSA #24 Posted March 28, 2009 Also, is the version you're looking at the US model? If it is grab it! It's the Japanese system, but luckily it will play all the disks, and it's all complete.. in box, with baggies.. which is a BIG sell for me . Can't wait to see some pics of the PipPin in action! I'll be doing Pippin game reviews as soon as I get it . So you'll see the best (literally...) footage of the gameplay on tons of games that have never been put on youtube before. Jess Ragan #25 Posted March 29, 2009 May as well have made a poll that said, "Kick in the groin or punch in the face? You choose!" If I had to make a choice, I guess I'd say the Neo-Geo CD, but it's not much of a choice. A Pippen (PipPin?) would be a better collector's item, but there's not much to play on it.
