So, who's reputable and good and installing mod chips?

Recommended Posts

I recently got a Panasonic Q GC that looks new, but I want it to be able to play US DVDs and GC games. I found a chip online called the Qoob that allows both to be played, but I have no idea how to solder chips.. and was wondering if someone could help me out with this who knows what they're doing. Online services that used to do this, don't anymore.. and I'm kinda plum out of luck.

Thanks in advance!

Anybody? I find it hard to believe no one in AA has ever done a mod chip installation before and couldn't figure this out... :ponder:

Ask on assemblergames.com Their modding community is more active.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

Just do it yourself. It isn't that complicated.

Any the stuff I know how to do is really easy for me, but hard for others ;). Soldering and stuff is NOT my specialty. I'm sure it's easy for some of you guys, but the thought of me trying is laughable at best.

I am good with electronic repairs, but I'll tell you up front I'm not touching a Q. They are too hard to come by, and one slip of the iron could spell disaster.

I'd love to be able to solder, but alas, I have the "mechanics fear" and my dexterity has greatly decreased over the years, especially my fine motor ability (breaking my fingers might have something to do with that...).

Personally, I'd leave a Q like it is. They are super rare anymore, and it would be a great showpiece.

Yea, I think you and I need to join the same club :ponder: .

Are there any import only GC games worth having? I mean, if I can't run US DVDs or game disks, it's not even going to be used >_>.

I might have some luck at the Assembler website, but honestly, I don't know those guys like I know the people here at AA, so I feel a little iffy about trusting someone with my system. Their admin might offer to help, but even at that, I have no idea who he is, ya know?

Is there a softmod, like that used on a PS2? That might get you more mileage from your showpiece.

Unfortunately no there's not :(. I wish there was, as I don't mind doing disk swaps ect.

Actually, I just found out the japanese freeloader works for the games part. It doesn't, however, let you play american dvds.

btw, still no one on assembler or aa that can help me out here :-/

That's cool, but just my opinion, unless the cube is your ONLY DVD player I personally would not waste it (IE: Wear it down) playing any movies on it. I mean it is a cool and somewhat rare machine so just save it for playing games..............

Honestly, at this point, I'm considering just that. I might just get a Freeloader and say to hell with the chip mod. I found a guy who can do it for me, but he's asking me to disassemble the Q and send him the motherboard. How would he test to see if it worked then? My main concern in this being, ive seen tons of people on other forums say that they have ruined their Q's because they installed the chip and they did something wrong and it became a big problem. I don't think it's worth the convenience, and, like you said, I don't know if risking ruining a machine that's worth $400+, that will soon be as rare as an N64DD, is a good idea.

I'd turn him down. Half the reason I won't mod one is that I'm afraid of breaking something during disassembly. Can't the dude just explain how to find out if you have a compatible board? Or why can't he just sell you a Freeloader on the condition that you know your Q might not work with it? If it were me, I'd think a few dollars more for a swap disc would be pocket change compared to what I spent on the Q. The last one I saw sold went in the mid $300 range. I can't see a Freeloader being more than $20 or $30 tops, but I never checked on 'em, either.

Then again, if it were my own, I might actually rip it down for a mod chip. Ruining my own equipment is one thing, though, but I will not take the risk on someone else's stuff.

Well good news. I found a very reputable company who's willing to start doing these mods again for me. I trust them, it's cheap as dirt, I'm happy... yay. I thankfully didn't order the Freeloader, so now I'll have a professional install, all the options i want, for basically what I would have spent for soft mods.

:D
