8th lutz #1 Posted April 2, 2009 I didn't own a Nes in the 1980's. I didn't get a Nes until Christmas of 1991 matter of fact. At the time, I was a 7th grader. The only video game system I remembered playing back in the late 1980's was the Atari 2600 Jr. My Dad and I went to a store in early 1988 to buy a video game system. I decided on a Atari 2600 Jr. at the time with Real Sports Football. The system and the games were cheaper than the Nes was at the time. My younger brother and I had fun playing games like Missile Command, Demon Attack, Jr. Pac-man, Midnight Magic, Kaboom, Jungle Hunt and Real Sports Football for an example back in the 1980's. iwan-iwanowitsch-goratschin #2 Posted April 2, 2009 Nope, never had a NES!
Emehr #3 Posted April 2, 2009 Yep. I was in seventh or eighth grade and my brother and I went in halves for the SMB/Duck Hunt setup with the gray Zapper. Still had my Atari hooked up as well. I believe this was around the time Circus World (or was it Kay-Bee?) was clearancing Atari games for like $2. I remember picking up Activision's Space Shuttle (along with a slew of other 2600 games) and pouring over the manual to get the shuttle into orbit and home again. It was a great time to be a gamer! It was around this time I truly started to appreciate the Atari and its games. The NES was fun as well. I was loving some SMB, Tyson's Punch-Out!, and Zelda. I remember getting the first issue of Nintendo Power as a "Free Sample Issue" for sending in registration or something. Great times!
BassGuitari #4 Posted April 2, 2009 Nope, I got mine probably in early 1992 (might have even been '91), when I was 6 or 7. I was in first grade.
Mister VCS #5 Posted April 2, 2009 No. The NES was the natural enemy of my Atari 2600. I was proud to see some "NES-titles" like Rampage and Double Dragon for my Atari 2600 in 1989. The Atari 2600 is the one and only king of all the game-systems!
Mirage #6 Posted April 2, 2009 I played with an NES maybe once or twice, or at least watched it once or twice at a friend's house around '88 or '89 but didn't think much of it at the time. I had already moved on from my C64 and wasn't into games much at that time. Finally played it around '92 (Tetris, SMB, Duck Hunt are about all I remember) and wasn't totally taken with it, though it was neat to play games again. Not too long after that, I started collecting old games/computers at thrift stores, etc, but didn't get an NES until much later.
vdub_bobby #7 Posted April 2, 2009 Yup, my family got one for Christmas somewhere between 85 and 88. I was proud to see some "NES-titles" like Rampage and Double Dragon for myAtari 2600 in 1989. The Atari 2600 is the one and only king of all the game-systems! Considering the "quality" of those particular 2600 games, I hope you aren't still proud. I love the 2600, but it's strength certainly isn't NES-like games.
figgler #8 Posted April 2, 2009 I had an NES in the 80s, but just barely. I beleive I got it for my 11th or 12th birthday which would have been 1988 or 1989. I got just the standard Control Deck, with no games so my dad took me to Consumer's Distributing (remember them?) and I picked out Kid Icarus. The really cool thing was that year my whole family teamed up to support the new NES for my birthday - so I also got Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Zelda 2 and Pro Wrestling that year. Talk about a sweet line up to start your NES off with
aftermac #9 Posted April 2, 2009 Nope. I probably got my NES in 1991. I didn't have it too long, since I sold it to get a SNES when it came out. I bugged my parents for an NES for Christmas 1987, but received my 2600 Jr. (which I still have) instead. I was pretty disappointed at the time, but got over it quickly. If I hadn't received the 2600 I probably wouldn't be here on AtariAge today.
+Ransom #10 Posted April 2, 2009 Yup. I'd been without a console since I got the Atari 400 (and later the 1200XL). So the NES was the first console I owned post-Colecovision. I didn't get the NES right away; I'm pretty sure it was just a couple of months before SMB2 came out. I bought the NES with my own money, by the way. Must have been the first console I bought that way....
NE146 #11 Posted April 2, 2009 Of course I did! One thing I've been in my life and that's a fan of VIDEO GAMES. So I devoured the latest and greatest of them as they came out and had a friggin blast. It was never a conflict with my Atari stuff. As it was with every other console, it just added to my library. I was in college by the way and also had a Sega Master System with my NES, so I never would feel limited like I did in the 5200 vs. Colecovision days Oh, and I had a Famicom bootleg before I ever had a NES. I agree with you, NES-like games are not the strength of the 2600, but it was nice to see (and to buy) these "modern" titles for my good old Atari. It was a big surprise to see Double Dragon for the Atari 2600 at a german warehouse. The 2600 was not dead (despite the NES, Sega Master System or Sega MegaDrive). Very cool at this time! I like Double Dragon 2600, it is a quality-title! And I like the animated Rampage title screen... Edited April 2, 2009 by Mister VCS
vdub_bobby #13 Posted April 2, 2009 And I like the animated Rampage title screen... Classic back-handed compliment!
nester #14 Posted April 2, 2009 My family got one for Christmas in either '88 or '89. I didn't have one long in the 80s but then again I was only 5.
Reaperman #15 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) by the time I got one, NES was dying, genesis was already comming with sonic (and wasn't much more expensive $129 instead of $100 IIRC). I can't remember if SNES was out yet--probably 1991-92 though I was just a kid, so saving up took a long time. My folks weren't helping because I think they assumed that if I stuck with the 800XL, I might actually learn something. Which I did...in addition to BASIC programming, I learned that all my friends had NES systems and made fun of me. lushgirl_80 #16 Posted April 2, 2009 Had one from early 1987 through 1995.... even owned a spare one my cousin gave me since they got one of those tv sets with the built-in NES. For some reason left both the NES systems behind when my family moved to Florida in '95. Three years later in '98 I bought one personally for myself at Funcoland and still have that til now. My game collection has been growing....so far I've got 72 games and still counting...
Prodos8 #17 Posted April 2, 2009 I was given one in '87 as a gift. I was 17 then and only used it for about a year as I was more interested in computers. My brother ended up owning it and used it far more than I ever did.
Recycled #18 Posted April 2, 2009 Never owned a Nintendo product. My kids have the Wii and a couple of Ds's....but that doesn't count, because I don't use them.
atarian63 #20 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) No, I worked at a place in 86 and 87 that sold them but I was too busy with the 8bit atari and the ST. The nes was just kind of yawn, though we did play alot of Duck Hunt at work, that was fun. Got one to add to the collection in the 90's for the Tengen titles. Jess Ragan #24 Posted April 2, 2009 Hell yes! Just barely, though. I was getting by with the Atari 2600 and my friend's 5200 until making the leap to the NES in 1988. Can you believe that Nintendo actually keeps track of this stuff? I looked through my purchasing records at Nintendo.com a few years back, and sure enough, they've got the purchase date of my NES listed as June 1988. Snider-man #25 Posted April 2, 2009 Nope, and you know why? 'Cause I had a Commodore 64. And my friends had Ataris, Apples, Amigas, and every other home computer system known at the time. And I remember saying, and I quote, "Who in their right mind is gonna buy a cart-based game system anymore? It's all computers now. That thing is gonna die on the vine, mark my words." Nearly thirty years later and they STILL make me eat crow on that prediction.
