ianoid #2 Posted April 6, 2009 Seems neat, but the discussion is way over my head. If it's pretty plug n' play, and there were some simple client for a PC or something that I could use, I'd probably pick one up. I've found that most of the hobbiest projects for classic computers are more complicated than I'm interested in dealing with, and I'm losing interest. Console homebrew stuff, by it's very nature, is always easier.
gklinger #3 Posted April 6, 2009 It's very straightforward. Plug the C64NIC+ into your 64, plug an ethernet cable into the cartridge and you're good to go. Naturally you'll need to run software that can utilize the network connection. There are games like Artillery Duel and NetRacer or you could use Guruterm to connect to a Commodore BBS or WarpCopy64 for reading and writing disk images or if you want to do something really silly you can use Contiki to run a webserver. The C64NIC+ is somewhat unique in that it's the first ethernet device for the 64 that doesn't piggyback on another device or come as a raw circuit board and it's especially promising because of the on-board ROM socket. There are all kinds of uses for that and from what I'm hearing, some interesting new applications are on the way. Also, it's inexpensive. That never hurts. ianoid #4 Posted April 7, 2009 Could I hook it up directly to my computer via ethernet and send the C64 ROMs or disk images to run programs and play games? IS that WarpCopy64, and is it east to get onto a C64 for use? This sounds cool. Although I'm so lame I hardly have the time to test disk drives, let alone run a program on one. I think I have a good one though, and it would be fun to use this like a multicart. But then again, the ideal for me would be a cart that takes some flash card that I could load up a billion disk images on. Is there something like that? gklinger #5 Posted April 7, 2009 Could I hook it up directly to my computer via ethernet and send the C64 ROMs or disk images to run programs and play games? You're talking about using a remote machine as a disk drive? No, you won't be able to do that without additional software and that is not what WarpCopy64 does (follow the link I gave earlier for an explanation of what it does do.) There is talk of an ethernet version of Serial Slave (Ethernet Slave?) but as yet, it does not exist. But then again, the ideal for me would be a cart that takes some flash card that I could load up a billion disk images on. Is there something like that? Yes. There is a device like what you are describing and it is called the 1541 Ultimate. Coincidently, it can be purchased with an ethernet option. The downside is that it costs approximately 4-5 times more than the C64NIC+.

deathtrappomegranate #7 Posted April 9, 2009 Never mind..... Cool..now I have no clue what this was about. You may be better off that way. The OP stole $117.50 from me in June of last year.
