Ian Primus #1 Posted April 6, 2009 I never got "into" the Jaguar like I got into the previous three Atari consoles, but I do have one. I found it at a flea market for $25 two or three years ago, and just had to have it. When I first got it, I played a few games of Cybermorph and Primal Rage, and then let the mighty cat sleep... But yesterday, something got in my head that I had to play it again, so I retrieved it from it's shelf and hooked it up to the TV. A couple oddities that I don't remember. There is a vertical band of odd digital interference in the picture, off to the left side. Also, I had a hard time getting the picture to come in clearly - I tried both channel 3 and 4, and fiddling with the fine tuning knob, and was able to get a slightly better picture on channel 4. I found that the official Jaguar RF switch seems to introduce a fair amount of interference - the one from my Nintendo works much better. Still have that band of noise in the picture though. All the games I tried worked fine - or at least, they seemed to. Except Chekered Flag. There was no sound whatsoever, but the game plays fine. I can't imagine that it's supposed to be like that... The cartridge looks perfectly clean, although I didn't try cleaning it yet. I'll have to try that later. Now I just need to track down some more games for this thing... -Ian
Zerosquare #2 Posted April 6, 2009 RF output on the Jag is mediocre. Get an RGB cable for the best picture if your TV has a SCART socket, or a S-video one otherwise. Sound level can be set for each cart, and is stored in a non-volatile memory. Your game has propably been set to "mute" or a very low volume. Check the manual to find out how to set the volume ; if you don't have it, you can find it online in the Games section of AtariAge.

OK - that's good to know, at least there isn't anything wrong with the console then. I might have to get an S-video cable (or composite) - my other TV has that. This one only has 300 ohm flat pair antenna lead inputs. Sound level can be set for each cart, and is stored in a non-volatile memory. Your game has propably been set to "mute" or a very low volume. Check the manual to find out how to set the volume ; if you don't have it, you can find it online in the Games section of AtariAge. Ah.. I did not know that. I'll have to check that out - I looked up the manual on AtaiAge, and yes - there is a feature to change the sound volume and save it. I'm really suprised that it has NVRAM for that sort of thing. I'll try that when I get a chance. -Ian
mcjakeqcool #4 Posted May 3, 2009 Checkered Flag on the Jag does have sound, but it is very primitave, in other words there is no music, just sound effects. I enjoyed it personaly, but you have do put up with the basics, remember this is a 3d game from 1994 we are talking about here!

Checkered Flag has music, and damn fine music too! Maybe YOU have your music shut off on the cart, try pressing the "0" button on the keypad to turn it on or check to see if the music has been turned down all the way (press pause in game, then push the A,B&C buttons, one of them will display the music volume.
mcjakeqcool #6 Posted May 4, 2009 Ok! I will try doing that. Thanks!
ls650 #7 Posted May 4, 2009 Yes, it's a common complaint... because the sound and music volumes are handled separately in most games, it's possible to have one volume turned down all the way, yet the other is fine. In most Jag games, as noted above, you Pause the game, and then hit the A, B, or C buttons to pick the different sound volume controls.

This game really does have some good music. I made a sort of soundtrack video with some songs from the game I like. I didn't bother worrying about trying to race for first place, was just messing around, listening to the music.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P0pQq5EfCY
Gunstar #10 Posted March 19, 2015 Now we just need one more F1 racer on the Jag, one that uses the polygon landscape engine and music from Checkered Flag, and the cars, control, A.I. and at least the frame-rate (not great but better than CF) of WTR. Then we would have a top-notch Jag F1 racer...
sirlynxalot #11 Posted March 19, 2015 The previous owner of my Tempest 2000 cart had muted the music. Heresy!

Yes, yes, I know, if the Jag had only been supported another year, the best port of Daytona USA ever would've been released which would've shown the Jag's true power.
JAGUAR #14 Posted March 19, 2015 I think if Rebellion had more time with the game they could have improved the framerate and controls. I read it was rushed out before Christmas 1994. Not to mention I bet they weren't paid very well by Atari. With better pay the game would even be that much better.
Gunstar #15 Posted March 19, 2015 (edited) Or port a good one from the ST, which would be better than all of that put together LOL. That depends on the game. Yes, there are good ST racers, I really like VROOM!/F1, and Lotus 1-3 rocks, and yes, I prefer both of those examples to CF, and am glad you made the suggestion of an ST racer, I would have already, but by the time I was back on the scene you weren't taking requests. But, I still prefer WTR on the Jag miles over those types of ST racers, even if WTR still falls short in some aspects of expectation and design, to me personally, the best part is the most important part and it is intact in WTR: great gameplay. But, if you are suggesting something like this: ported to the Jag, with a good jump in FPS, them that could be better than CF and WTR. In any case, I do love racers and would love to play any of these on the Jag, even so... by the way, I LOVED playing VROOM!/F1 on my Mega STE set at 16ZMhz, that was FAST AND SMOOTH, even two players. If that could be achieved on Jag, awsome. But if it's just the same frame-rate of the it running at 8Mhz, then...meh...cool, but... I wouldn't mind a totally sprite based racer on the Jag, made for the Jag, like VROOM! or Lotus, but i also want it to use 16-bit or better color depth and 30-60FPS, like Super Burnout, or even "photo-real" sprites, that would be cool. I keep thinking, every time I play PhaseZero or Dr. Typo's Fallen Angels that the height-field graphics engine would be great for some type of off-road racer with sprites for vehicles and some scenery (trees, shrubs, rocks, etc.) Think Crystal Dynamics 'Off Road Interceptor' but 360 degrees of freedom and a racing game, not forward only and a shooter like OFI.. But yes, the Jaguar could do better than CF and WTR, regardless of how that better racer compares to other "next-gen" systems of the day.
JAGUAR #17 Posted March 19, 2015 (edited) Daytona is / was so overrated. Just because the arcade graphics were awesome and it was fun playing against 3 other people. But the actual gameplay was pretty crap and it was like IMPOSSIBLE to ever get first place in a race against the AI. I mean seriously. That was part of the reason Saturn didn't sell so well when it first came out. The Daytona port wasn't that great but I mean even if the port was near perfect, the game itself still really isn't that fun. Most people think Nascar sucks and is boring, myself included. Give me Ridge Racer any day or Wipeout. Sorry poor Jaguar, no good 3d racing games for you. World Tour Racing is Ok, but, just ok (very good music though)... I just figured out Checkered Flag has really good music, kind of its saving grace in a small way. I also thought Virtua Fighter was overrated and like Tekken better. I haven't put much time into Fight for Life but... Seems more like Virtua fighter than tekken, kinda slow and floaty... I need a faster fighter.
