I would have voted for Demon Attack as a kid but my grown up tastes point me to Megamania today.

Original - Centipede, Stargate, Berzerk.

Homebrews - Sea Wolf, Gun Fight, StarFire.

Honourable mentions - Gorf & Pleiades

Megamania blows DKJR.

Happy Easter!

IMO, the best vertical SHMUP on the 2600 is Megamania, with Solar Storm a close second. Always have been. No others come close. BTW, Solar Storm uses the paddles kinda like Demons to Diamonds.

You might also check out Commie Mutants.

Going with Demon Attack this was a game i remember being quite popular with us kids where i grew up at and while we all owned or knew some one who owned a copy of Phoenix it was Demon Attack that was our favorite.

I like Phoenix because of the variety over Demon Attack and the freedom of movement over Megamania. But they are all fun.

The little alien guy in the mother ship in Phoenix also cracks me up.

Easily Demon Attack. Playing that is like baking a delicious nostalgia cake. With razorblades baked in. Okay, mabye not razor blades.

Of the three you listed, I'm going with Demon Attack-- mainly because I never bought and played the other two! ;)

But my favorite Atari 2600 shooter of all time is Millipede. After that-- probably Spider Fighter and Demon Attack, but also Missile Command and Star Voyager-- if those qualify as "shooters."

I love Megamania.

Hamburgers

Oreo Cookies (well, just cookies, but I pretended they were oreos)

Bugs

Tires

Diamonds

Irons

Bowties

Dice

At least I think that's the order.

Any way, that equals awesome.

I think those are my favorite 8-bit shooters (along with Galaxian for the ColecoVison and 2600) and like others here, Phoenix tops the 2600 list.

I grew up playing Demon Attack and still love it but Phoenix has that variety (all five screens was a pretty sweet feat back then) that gives it #1.

They're all fantastic games and a great reason to own an Atari 2600.

I always liked Space Cavern as well. I don't think it's a better game technically than those three, but I always really enjoyed it. Same for Spider Fighter.

I picked Demon Attack, as it's one of my all-time favorites.

I prefer Megamania of those three. Demon Attack's okay (Intellivision version smokes it though), but I don't really care much for Phoenix. Not a bad game, I just don't feel its vibe.

Out of those 3 I picked Phoenix...probably because I have a soft spot for arcade games on the 2600.

The 2600 has lots of great shooters, in fact it might possibly be the strongest genre on the system. Others I like:

Space Invaders (and the SI Deluxe hack)

Galaxian

Centipede

Millipede

River Raid

Gorf

Pleiades

Seawolf

Rainbow Invaders

Space Instigators

Worm War 1
