Rarity guide : Schtroumpfs : the SECAM version of SMURF

Recommended Posts

Hi,

It's a SECAM CBS Cart.

I'am pretty sure it was only produced in France. The game is the same game as smurf (rescue in gargamel's castle) but "sctroumpfs" (the French name of smurfs) is printed on the front and on the end label.

Regarding the large number of games produced for the PAL or the NTSC system, I think SECAM Games are very rare because of the low cart production, and this one especialy because of the original French label mentioning SECAM version with a different title.

I think, It should be very, very rare.

Albert, alex or tempest what's your point of view ?

If you are interested I can provide the cart, box and manual (in french) scans and the rom dump for the database.

Please let me know. ;)

It would be great to get scans of the cart, box and manual, as well as a ROM dump, so we can add them to AtariAge. I thought we already had this title listed under CBS Electronics, but I see that we don't. Maybe we've been neglecting the SECAM titles because we weren't sure how to organize them. :) From our perspective here in the US it is certainly rare, but it's harder for me to judge its relative rarity to those over in Europe. For that I'll have to defer to your judgement, especially since you're in France.

I own one version from this Schtroumpfs. But I have seen an other version too on eBay for some weeks.

One has a black case and looks like the PAL version Smurfs.

The other has a white case and look like the NTSC version.

But both was called Schtroumpfs. :?

There is a Spanish Version from "Smurf" as well.

In Spain" Smurfs" are called "Pitufo" and that is what was the name of the card!

I saw one on Ebay a while ago. The seller offered it with loads of common stuff for a horrible price, so I had to pass.

Too bad I do not find the picture anymore. I am sure I saved it on my computer.

I would like to get one of those.

Greetings

Jens

Actually I think all of CBS's SECAM games are exactly the same as the PAL versions, except for the label. At least the Schtroumpfs binary that you sent me a year or so ago was identical to the PAL version. Considering that the CBS UK games also say on the label "for use with PAL (UK) systems only", while there is no reason why the game wouldn't work on other European PAL systems as well, makes me believe that the European CBS cartridges were all the same, and only the labels were different from country to country.

The only company that might have created special SECAM versions of their games would be Activision. On a French website I once saw some pictures of Decathlon and H.E.R.O. with little "S" stickers on them. But unfortunately I don't know anyone who owns these carts to verify their TV format.

These Activision games with S stickers for SECAM pop up quite regularly on Ebay.fr. Theres a bunch of boxed games on Ebay fr at the moment, with 2 activision games that have "S" stickers. Also in that lot is a boxed Schtroumpfs.

Also, see the finished auction

Incidentally, this Smurf variation pops up in the UK quite a bit. There's no way that the french version is more than an uncommon cart. Its certainly not very rare. I notice Khrysun you got yours for e5.50 ;)

I'll send all for the database within a week ;-)

Woaw a spanish version.

I think all these European versions with a different name on the label

are very interresting for collectors as they were produced only in some

European countries.

I think the german version is called Smurf too, I wonder own many

variations of this game exist (I mean with a different name).

Anyway, comparing to the large number of this game produced with the

Smurf label on it, I think these cartridges are more than uncommon (on

a worldwide point of view).

yep, It was a bargain I think i got a lot of luck and It goes with the notice I din't own so far ;-)

Indeed, about the schtroupfs dump file I sent you, I remember it was the same as the PAL version but just with a different bankswitch address.

I recently bought a Keystone keppers cart with the S label on it.

I'll dump it and send you the binary if you're interested in.

khryssun,

the smurf-thing is a very special one because the little blue guys have different names in nearly every country and so they had to sell the games in their own countries name, otherwise the kid would not notice.

In Gemany the are called "Schlümpfe" (Schluempfe) but unfortunately we did not get our own label on the cards

:(

Matty: is there a german box called "Schlümpfe" ?

I am not sure

Smurfs, Schtroumpfs, Pitufo...

let´s see what else will pop up

Greetings

Jens

khryssun:

You are right about the differences in the ROMs. But that has something to do with the cartridge reader, not with the game itself. If you use 7800CTRL with the -a command line switch, a slightly different reading routine is used for this cartridge type, and the binary will probably be identical to the PAL one.

I'd really be interested in seeing your Keystone Kapers game. Did you already try it out on your SECAM VCS and your SCART 7800 to see if the colours are different?

I have look at my Box, and see this

Designed for use on PAL (U.K.) TV System

Printed in Holland

So its not the german version, I own an UK version, printed in Holland. :D

But I have never see a Box with Schlümpfe, so I think its calls too only Smurf in germany.

I can confirm that the French Secam "<S>" version of H.E.R.O. has a Secam palette and is different from the PAL version.
