Anyone had this happen to their FC Twin?

Recommended Posts

For whatever reason, just yesterday, my FC Twin started having controller issues. Here's the problem: when the Y button is pressed on both the Player 1 and Player 2 controllers, it not only triggers the Y button, but it also triggers Start, Down and Right on both controllers. This causes a wackload of problems in games with 2-player cooperative gameplay, but there's one part that I don't understand: it only happens on the Super NES side. What the hell? Has anyone had this happen to their FC Twin?

I'm using original Nintendo-brand Super NES controllers, in case anyone's wondering. The system was also modified with a Super NES lockout chip for full compatibility with Nintendo SA-1 games and S-Video for the Super NES side. It was working perfectly fine after both modifications were applied.

Okay, get this: when I use official Nintendo-made Super NES controllers on both controller ports, pressing the Y button on both controllers triggers that combination of buttons, but when I use a Nintendo-made controller in one port and a Yobo Super NES clone controller(not the FC Twin's pack-ins), pressing the Y button on both controllers DOESN'T TRIGGER ANYTHING EXCEPT THE Y BUTTON ON THE RESPECTIVE CONTROLLER! WTF? Did Yobo somehow manage to force you to use at least 1 of their controllers on the FC Twin by having official Super NES controllers do weird stuff if you're using 2 of them? But, then again, it only does this on the Super NES side, which adds to the mystery.

Maybe some chip, either in your controller/s or the Joypad Controller Chip inside the FC Twin, fryed somehow, but in a way that does not stop it from working completely but produces some strange effects.

Or maybe there's some unwanted connection between two wires that should be isolated from each other somewhere?

Just guesses, though.

You know, I actually got my FC Twin by accident. I was pissed off I bought a defective Super NES Mini, and since the FC Twin was for sale at the same place I bought the defective Super NES Mini, I bought it(and one of the pack-in controllers were broken out of the box, so that already was a bad start).

But I wonder: what chip(s) in the FC Twin would cause such a problem?

By the way, no matter what official Nintendo-made Super NES controller I use(I have multiple Super NES controllers, including the rarer SNS-102 version with the Nintendo logo molded in the plastic), the problem doesn't go away unless I plug in my Yobo Super NES clone controller.

But you said it had worked before even using the original NES controllers and all of a sudden the problems kicked it? That's what I got from your first post, sorry if I'm mistaken.

I don't know anything particular about the NES hardware, let alone the FC Twin ;)

However there propably is some kind of chip that recieves the signals from the controllers so games can "ask" that chip "hey, what buttons is the player pressing?" as to put these button presses into action in the game... If there is something wrong with the chip, it could do unexpected stuff.

However, if this was the case, why does it work normally with the Yobo controllers... Because if they're NES-compatible they should send the same signals as the original controllers.

And that's what really bugs me: why does the Y button issue not happen at all when a Yobo Super NES controller and a Nintendo Super NES controller are used and why does the Y button issue only happen on the Super NES side when using 2 Nintendo Super NES controllers(I'm talking SUPER NES controllers, not NES)? I can live with it, as I don't find the Yobo Super NES controller all that bad(aside from a super-short cord and slightly unresponsive D-Pad), but it's really annoying. This is why I'm asking if anyone had this problem occur on their FC Twin(I may have realized the issue recently because I rarely ever play 2-player games - my FC Twin might have had that problem out of the box and I never knew about it!).

Yeah, the same thing happens on mine.

I believe the reason FC Twin controllers are exempt from this ridiculous issue is because they seem to generate different signals with their button presses or something (I have no idea the exact terms, as I am definitely not advanced in this field :ponder:) Because on them, and only them, NES games use X and A as auto fire buttons, but does not an any other SNES controller.

Another odd thing I noticed, and this goes for the Retro Duo as well, is that on Gauntlet II pressing X or A makes player 3 and 4 respectively join into the game, and on the FC Twin controllers, even pressing Y and B makes them join in as well...
