Gregory DG #1 Posted April 26, 2009 I noticed that Valve is offering the PC version of Orange Box for $10. Darn good deal for the 3 people (myself included) who haven't bought the games after Half-Life 2. I'm eager to try TF2.
Mirage #2 Posted April 26, 2009 I got the Valve Complete pack awhile back for quite a bit more $ than that. The Orange Box games are great, so that's a fantastic deal. Heck, Portal alone is worth spending $10 on, so it's like the other games are free.
yuppicide #3 Posted April 27, 2009 At first maybe, but once you really get into Portal it's worth $10 alone I think also. Very good game.
Artlover #4 Posted April 27, 2009 Absolutely sublime from start to finish and I will jam forks into my eyes if I ever use those words to describe anything else ever again. Yeah, I know it's not very funny to love a game, but f--k you! Portals is great and if you don't think so you must be stupid." Truer words have never been spoken. Just remember, you won't beable to play the PC version any time your internet connection is down, or the Steem servers are full, or in the distant future when the Steem servers are shut down. Do yourself a favor, after you buy it, download an internet copy (it's not stealing if you already bought it), then you can play it whenever you want unrestricted and without Valve spying on you. Finally it appears we agree on something. Portal isn't just a great game. It's the best videogame ever made, period. Like Zero Punctuation, I don't say that lightly, and my favorite games have traditionally been arcade classics. But Portal is in a league of its own. Portal was worth purchase of the Orange Box at full price before it was released separately, so it's certainly worth $10 now. The first part of that is completely untrue. I played through the whole game (Portal) on my Windows machine without even a network cable plugged in after I downloaded it. I just wasn't able to get the "achievements", which I didn't even realize at the time, since it was the first Steam game I played. You can play with no internet connection no problem, and that's true for any Steam game so long as you don't care about the online features, just like any other game. What you do, if you want to, is download it, then you can burn it to a DVD right in Steam, then you can reinstall it anytime you want. Now, as for installing it later if Steam's servers are shut down... yeah, that part is probably true. If Steam is not going, you'll probably not be able to validate it, and it won't run. But, Valve has a great reputation for excellent customer service, and I fully expect that when they someday shut down the Steam service, they may provide some sort of solution to allow people to continue to install games they've bought and backed up to disc. Maybe not, we'll have to see. Either way, your first statement is untrue. You've probably never used Steam, have you? Lord Helmet #7 Posted April 27, 2009 I just picked up the 360 version of Orange Box...I'm looking forward to seeing what all of the hype is about regarding Portal.

You can play Steam games offline, you just need to make sure your games are completely updated and you've played them after the update. But you are wrong about Steam's customer service. While Valve makes great games, their customer service is complete and utter garbage.

I guess it's a case where your mileage will vary. At any rate, even if Steam doesn't offer a way to play them after/if they discontinue service, someone will come up with a crack/hack to get them to play, I have no doubt about that, if even a few people care by then. My main point was to correct the misinformation about not being able to play them offline, which was completely untrue.
