autosave tragedy!

Recommended Posts

Last night after a few pints at the pub I came home and felt like beating a few missions on Saints Row 2, I'm about halfway thru the game. I was mashing the green button to jump into the action and accidentally loaded my first save instead of the most recent autosave. My first save was right after I had completed the opening 2 levels, anyways you really cant tell because your guy wakes up in his crib and starts running around the city, I completed a diversion to up my respect meter and then went to play a mission. I instantly realized it was a level I had already cleared and went back to the main menu to load my 45% completed game....The damn thing had autosaved and erased my 45% file!!! Hours of gaming and unlockables were gone, I had half the city under my gang and now its all wiped out. There were a lot of really tedious driving levels and boss battles I cant see myself going through again, its such a shame because I was really enjoying the game. I cant believe there is no way to revert to the previous save but after searching online it seems theres no "recycle bin" on the 360.

Oh yes, that reminds me of something...

Once I played Serious Sam on my PC and I nearly beat the game, there was only one level left... The whole game I only used the quick save feature, but that was perfectly fine - why bother to call up the menus if you can just press one button...

However, I was going somewhere, but my brother asked, if he could play Serious Sam on my computer and I said "Sure, why not." I started a new game and explained to him, how the quicksave feature worked...

Later when I came back and wanted to finish the last level, I suddenly realized the number of quicksave slots was limited and my brother had saved often enough to overwrite any of my saves! :_(

Nothing quite like that terrible feeling when you realize you just lost hours and hours worth of your game progress. Playing RPGs, especially back in the day when there was no such thing as auto save. I had been there many times.

I just had that again... I played some Morrowind again and was just exploring some area I hadn't been before for the purpose of level grinding. ;) When I had nearly finished to explore the area I that I had planned to explore I got into a fight with some creature I hadn't fought before, but I decided to try it and in fact I wasn't doing too bad, but with some bad luck I managed to get myself killed, in the same moment realizing that I never saved in the entire session (and never rested, so no autosaves as well). But too top it all off, while I was watching the death animation the message "you should rest and meditate about what youve learned" - indicating a levelup - was still on the screen. :x

I had this happen on FFX when I loaded it up on a friend's PS2. I was trying to show off my progress, so I plugged my memory card into slot 2. Muscle memory led to me to save into slot 1, though, and it killed his save file.

From now on, if I have multiple cards with saves of the same game on them, they only stay plugged in long enough to transfer data (such as selling cars in GT3) and then the unused card gets pulled.

Once when I was playing Crusader: No Regret I accidentally saved the game right after I died. I only had one save file as well.

I hate most autosaves. Can't tell you how many times I've had a game save right before a boss when I have no ammo or something and I could have gone back to a save and redone a small section but I'm stuck with a major redo instead.

An autosave should never overwrite a manual save and a game should always ask if you are sure if you want to load a save game.

It has to be said again and again and again until it is a habit that requires zero thought. Never ever ever ever ever depend solely on the autosave feature. If the game allows you to make a save separate from the autosave... DO IT!!!

I feal your pain man, but that's why I use so much memory myself, at the very least, I'll do a hard save befor shutting the system down, so I always got that and the auto save on say fallout or whatever I'm playing.

Hmm...wonder if the system remembers what uhlockables you got? I just wonder cause you can cheat in saints row, but it doesn't save unlockables when you do, but use it to get to where you were, and turn it back off, don't know why not.

I think once cheats are enabled you can't unlock anything even if you turn the cheats back off.

I had no idea you played SR2 also, Christian.

At any rate, I can't tell you how annoying the autosaves are in Oblivion, since I can never keep track of which save is what.

I thought I was done with the game but I couldnt let it go so I've started over. Its not the worst thing since I've decided to focus on another gang first, those levels at least are new to me. I looked into cheats but I couldnt find any sort of level unlock, and besides its all about how your character is built up so it wouldnt really work anyways. I'm just so pissed there was no way to reverse it, I cant understand why there isnt some sort of recycle bin, I'm saving to the hard drive so space is not the issue.

Just for the hell of it I made my character a chubby British version of myself, it really adds something to the game to see him instead of some thug character model.

I haven't played my XBox 360 for awhile. Mostly I've been using my new PS3 which I got last month for my birthday. Still, I do need to get SR2. I have the original, but the disc got damaged.

Ouch, does it still remember the cheats when you turn the system off though? Probably, but eh...

Do BD's get damaged easily? I'm still a bit leary of them, but I hear their pretty durable, though I heard that about DVD's to, and they don't seem to be any different IMO than CD's. Of course, I buy most my stuff new, and keep good care of it, but you nevver can tell when some of hur friends come over what will happen.
