GorillaSpawn #1 Posted May 13, 2009 Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knows of links to completely new NES roms out there? Is anyone currently developing these so they can be used on emulators? Links to free or for sale ones would be appreciated! (for that matter, new games for Atari, sega, etc. would be appreciated too)

There have been a few submitted to the minigame competitions over the years and Grand Theftendo has been vaporware for a few years now, but not much else. A lot of hacks, though, if that's your thing. Google "nes homebrew" or "nes hack rom" to find that stuff. (for that matter, new games for Atari, sega, etc. would be appreciated too) Erm. See that "Store" link up there? Clicky. There has been some Genesis development; search the homebrew forum here and, again, Google is your friend. There have been a few RPG releases over the last few years, though I don't think the ROMs have been released. Edited May 13, 2009 by vdub_bobby
Atariboy #3 Posted May 13, 2009 Any particular reason why there has been no homebrew development of note for the NES? Any difficultys with such a thing, or is the community just too spread out and far flung to organize themselves to accomplish such things, unlike what the Atari community has here at AtariAge? robotwo #4 Posted May 13, 2009 I've just started programming Z80 Assembly for the Sega MasterSystem ... and so far so good :B

The big problem USED to be that obtaining new materials to make carts was a problem. Now that sites like RetroUSB have made new cart molds and circuit boards, that issue is fading away. The other major issue is the sheer complexity of programming for the NES. It's almost as bad as programming for the 2600. Not impossible, but it requires some serious effort to get started. robotwo #6 Posted May 14, 2009 The things I found to be the most annoying about programming for the NES was first: the confusion over it having a serial controller, which I got over after a hour or so ... but then I tried loading the Palette... and it wouldn't work |8 I even tried a dedicated Palette Generator that was included with the assembler , but the outcome was always monocrome And so I decided to go the SEGA way, a wise choice

The other major issue is the sheer complexity of programming for the NES. It's almost as bad as programming for the 2600. Not impossible, but it requires some serious effort to get started. I think the main issue is the lack of new materials to make carts. 2nd issue is that a bare cart is very limited, you need a mapper to do much of anything (like 4-way scrolling). And AFAIK (I just checked retrousb) nobody sells, or even makes, mappers. So you're limited to 32K, 2-way scrolling, limited RAM, and a few other limitations that I can't remember (DLIs and palettes, I think). Which is fine but most people who get hyped about making a NES game aren't hyped to make the next 10-Yard Fight, Balloon Fight, or Duck Hunt, they want to make Zelda III or some such. robotwo #8 Posted May 14, 2009 Just wanted to point out that MasterSystem have hardware 4-way scrolling built into the system and 8Kb RAM , and a 3.5MHz processor. much better than the NES' 2Kb RAM and 1.8MHz processor also , the NES have a 53(?) colour palette while the SMS uses a 64 colour palette. How easy is it to get raw materials for SMS carts?
robotwo #10 Posted May 15, 2009 How easy is it to get raw materials for SMS carts? hehe ^^; I only have one dev-cart with interchangeable EPROM, since I don't want to dissasemble more cartridges. But soon I'll start to make double-sided PCB's , but I'll still have no cases

This is probably the best known... http://www.virtualnes.com/play/?id=HBG-DP&s=9 Others worth tracking down are "Glider", "Mystic Pillars" and the "BioForce Ape" demo.
