What sticks should I get for my Multi Williams?

Recommended Posts

Hello

I have a Multi Williams machine I have been slowly piecing together. It currently has 2 "black bat" microswitch style joysticks but they are heavily worn and loose, one will not even center anymore, basically they suck and I want to replace them. I was wondering what the best sticks for this project would be? I love playing Robotron, Joust, etc.. and bad controls can really kill the game if you know what I mean. Any ideas of what sticks I should go with? Thanks! :)

I've always been happy with the standard red ball-top joystick(s) for all-purpose gaming. However, if you have "Blaster" in your cab, the feeling won't quite be right unless you have a flight-type stick.

My money would be an old school Williams set of sticks, ala Robotron. That way you have the real deal. Leaf springs and centering grommets are available, so you just need a good set of sticks. My .25.

Microswitches on Robotron...? Just sounds wrong.

With regular 'block' activated microswitch sticks I have to agree. I put a set in my Smash TV once for player 2 (to replace malfunctioning leaf units) and it just felt horrible.

On my MAME cabinet though, I use a rotary set. These allow you to roll the joystick circularly without that 'blocked' feeling.

QFT. Nothing besides a nice set of Wico ball tops with leafs will feel right. I know at some point, there was a repro run of the long shafts to match the Robotron originals. They may still be out there somewhere. In fact, I still need a set for the pair of sticks going into my Multi Williams.

Agreed. Also, if you are a *big* fan of Defender/Stargate, you'll have a tough time getting that reverse button where you want it w/ a standard 4/8 way Wico. But for Robotron, you gotta have the 2 leafs for sure. :)

Okay, I'm down with some original Williams sticks but where do you find them? If it's something I have to hunt for I'll probably just go for some Wico's since I want to play the thing sometime in the near future :D
