Good or crappy endings to video games

Recommended Posts

What were some of the most memorable endings you came across for a video game, whether it was a long, interesting epilogue or just a lame-ass "Congratulations" screen that made you say, "I BUSTED MY @$$ ON THIS GAME FOR 24 HOURS AND THIS IS MY REWARD??!!!"?

Feel free to put up pics of the ending if you can.

Alex Kidd High Tech World has without a doubt the worst ending of any SMS game I ever played. It's just a still image of him sitting in one of those sit down versions of Outrun. Level 4, the last level is a nightmare to get though, but for that piece of !@#$. It is just isn't worth it.

The ending to ICO is pretty cool (is PS2 "classic" yet?)

And as a kid I lost my mind when I found out you could get Samus down to her bits and pieces!

I was fairly underwhelmed by the end of Shadowgate and Univited. I put a lot into those games, for very little reward.

I was always happy to see the ending of Adventure of Link, but more because the game was so hard for me back then!

Absolute worst: Super Mario 2 ( It was aaaaallll a dream!.... ) how original especially after the rest of the game was not that bad. despite it not making any sense and having nothing to do with the original storyline ( I call t the Halloween 3 effect :D )

Best: Zombies ate my Neighbors. I really thought it was a nice touch to run around one last time and rescue the "neighbors" while seeing the creators of the game.

I actually like the ending of SMB2. Normally, I hate the "It was all a dream" cliche, but in this one case, it works. The reason being, the story behind the game has Mario discovering the land of Sub-Con by being led to a door in his dream. Since it started off as a dream, it's not cheap storytelling to end it that way.

The ending to Yoshi's Island is IMO the best ending in a video game ever. Also, fighting with the big bad Baby Bowser in 3D perspective is pretty cool, too. Second place goes to Mario Kart 64 with the groovy ending music.

I don't actually 'finish' many games, but last saturday I managed to finish Wall Street Kid on NES and I have to say I liked the ending quite a bit. It was just some still shots, text and then the credits, but given how few screens make up the rest of the game, it was a real treat for the eyes. (and yes, I did enjoy playing the game)

I have to say one of the better NES endings is Super C though. Awesome ending music, credits, and a flying chopper. I haven't been able to beat that one since I was young though.

I remember beating Casino Kid but not Wall Street Kid. The endings might have been similar. In Casino Kid you become a multi-millionaire, lounging by the pool and having your servants bring you drinks and food, and never having to worry about working again. Sweet ending!

Hope you knew about the 10 extra lives trick to help get you through Super C. Otherwise it really is tough going.

The King Of Fighters series had a lot of really good endings, where the 3-man/woman team would often interact with each other after the tournament ended. Hilarity often ensued.

I also liked the endings to Gunbird and Gunbird 2. Very messed up, and side-splitting!

I remember really liking the end to Pitfall:The Mayan Adventure. You finally rescue Dad and he's actually the little stick figure from the 2600 game. That was a great ending.

This was, IMO, one of the best games of the 16 bit era, and one of the best game sequels ever.

Worst ending:

Shrek 2 on the gamecube, what a piece of shit that was. It ended so quickly, but it's amazing how you can make a decent game out of a big title, but only need good first impressions to sell fast.

Best:

Super Mario World, brilliant 16-bit Jazz song.

Interesting that most fighting games have different/separate endings depending on the character you are playing with....I guess it makes the game interesting...not that i play that many fighting games

Especially when dealing with goofy Japanese humor. The ending usually starts out serious enough, then some absurd situation happens and snowballs into hopeless shenanigans by the conclusion's end, often with super-deformed expressions on everyone's faces. Sexual innuendo is often a focal point.

This particular ending of the shooting game Gunbird 2 made me nearly roll over with laughter.

Great game! Spent I don't know how long to get to......

The lamest ending screen in the Universe! Hey! Mr Developer! How bout you put up a little box that says 'You win' or 'This Dragon ain't gonna do anything. It's just here for show' or 'Turn the console off now and go to bed.' Any Damn thing!

Review:

Gameplay ..... 9

Graphics ..... 8.5

Engaging 2 player cooperative play..... 9.5

Lame Ass Ending....... 1 (the scale doesn't go below 1)

My fav: Tomb Raider II. Lara's about to drop her outfit and get in the bath then she looks at the camera and asks "Haven't you seen ENOUGH?" and shoots the player.

Worst ending: 2600 Chess. You checkmate the system, it buzzes, but then you can take the king and keep playing. Silly game doesn't even know it's over.

I think that ending is from Vegas Dream, when you reach $10,000,000. Casino Kid didn't even have an ending sequence, just credits. I've played both, and found them awfully tedious.

Anyhoo, my vote for WORST ending goes to Rampage on the NES. After beating the 128th level, Lizzie drops down and "destroys" the last area of the map. "CONGRATULATIONS!" appears over the blackened USA map, and then the credits roll.

The Master System version was way better. You only had to sit through 50 levels, five in each of 10 cities, and there is an actual ending sequence.

Yeah, that was probably it. I think I put in a cheat code to get that amount of money, so I wouldn't have to play through it.

Nice Faxanadu avatar. Got any extra Joker keys?

they sound similar. There was a big 'handshake' congratulation screen, then a static shot of your european castle. Followed by a static shot of you with a bag of money and a 'top secret' briefcase (why?) and all the minor characters give you some more praise, then credits role.

a vid is

really a treat for the eyes compared to the rest of the game, even though it's really nothing special compared to some other titles.

For example the Super C ending, is simple, but very well directed:

speaking of run-and-guns, the metal slug games (all that I've finished) had pretty neat endings. I really liked MS3
