BrainDrain #1 Posted September 30, 2002 G'day all! Firstly, its great to see there are so many people who have the same passion for all things Atari. And I thought i was all alone... I have about 25 catridges in my collection. It seems that I dont have many 'rare' games, judging by the guide on this site. But then i realised that there were a lOT of games not mentioned. Ive got this one cartridge for eg. its called 'Learning Spelling'. It has a totally irelavant picture of a cave shaped like a giant face on the cover. I got it off an old friend who cant remember who he got it from. You basically fly around in a UFO trying to zap letters which fly past the top of the screen from right to left. Has anybody heard of it before? By the way, I would never DREAM of selling it, so please dont ask Transmission terminated. Awaiting response.... +-^CrossBow^- #2 Posted September 30, 2002 Sounds like Word Zapper... Check the game listings here and see if this is the game your talking about. If so..I would venture to say you have a pirated copy of the game. Considering the odd label art you describe, and the title Learning Spelling....hehe..that just smells of a Pirate cart. Ze_ro #3 Posted September 30, 2002 That would definitely be a pirate of Word Zapper... Lots of pirate games had wildly irrelevant pictures on the cartridges. On the plus side though, pirate games are generally fairly rare. I've also never heard of this one before, so that should be good news for the rarity of it. --Zero
NE146 #4 Posted September 30, 2002 The title of this thread confuses me.. I thought everyone agreed that most "rare" games WERE doo doo (hence why they're rare). But yeah.. Crossbow's right. It does sounds like a pirate.
Inky #5 Posted September 30, 2002 The title of this thread confuses me.. I thought everyone agreed that most "rare" games WERE doo doo (hence why they're rare). Heh. Reminds me of something Wierd Al said on the DVD for UHF in the deleted scenes section... 'You know why these scenes were deleted? Because they SUCK!' BrainDrain #6 Posted September 30, 2002 Aaaah, yeah man, you guyz are right. I just checked it out and it's word zapper alright. Only difference is my copy was slapped together by some Chinese guy who, *remarkebly* spelt "Spelling" correctly on the cover! (J/K) At least I can proclaim to have a cartridge which is hard to come by. Ill sleep with it under my pillow tonight! My humble apologies for the misleading title. I should have called it "Doo-doo? Or rare doo-doo?"
BoOchan! #7 Posted October 1, 2002 Yeah, You get quite a few obscure games in Australia don't we? I;ve got this obscure Dual Language Virtua Fighter 2 for Megadrive.
DeV0 #8 Posted October 1, 2002 OMG, Australians have landed!,, ahem That cart is 4 sure a pirate job, I myself have a few with the mountain and the face on the label, Only the names have changed to something stupid like "ski man Vs tomcat" We seem to have plenty here, being close to asia probably explains that. I go to honkers at least once a year and you can still get atari carts at the temple street markets for those who may be visiting. I call it the urine st markets,, Youve been warned. BrainDrain #9 Posted October 1, 2002 Cash Converters can be a good place to look. Theres this one outlet (not telling which one yet ) which has like a few hundred loose cartidges. I only had a few minutes to look through it the other day. I bought about 5 games, including Pitfall- fully boxed in perfet condition, star wars - the arcade game, 32 in 1, Peles Soccer and Pacman. Each was only 1 dollar (Australian money ) Unfortunately, I was totally in the dark as to what could be a rarer game at the time. I just grabbed what i thought would be good. Now that i've checked out this great web site, I can go back armed with all the information i needed, lots i didn't, and a really, really long list of gotta get games. BoOchan! #10 Posted October 2, 2002 I always go to the swapmeets in perth (I bought all the decent stuff from the cashies in a 25km radius!) and theirs always something good at my locla carpark swapmeet. Or I put wanted ads in Perth's classifieds paper. Always plent of obscure German or cartridge consoles made in 1976. Even found a super rare Amiga CD32 their at this mans stall! Any its starting to get a bit off topic isn't it? Perth is full of sega and obscure stuff and dry of atari and nintendo stuff . But whenever i see about 30-50 carts, I'm sure to buy the lot! (If their is a few rare's chucked in and hardly any doubles!
DeV0 #11 Posted October 2, 2002 Pity i dont collect master system because you can find masses of these throughout sydney going from 1 to 5 dollars. I find going to the St vinnies central distribution store to be pretty damn good, I picked up river raid 2 boxed and one of those activision action paks for a dollar each. I find alot of european and bootleg carts all over the place, Lucky we live in such a multi cultural society here. Its a pity i cant find a pal rarity list anywhere for any system, Coz im thinking that HES produced alot of those "rare" ones making them not so rare depending on where you are. I personally think atariage is by far the best site for research and info, and the members are all ace. I think most cash converters have closed here for being a complete rip off, Blab blab blab blah blah etc

BoOchan! #13 Posted October 3, 2002 I seen 3 at my cashies down the road, so it might be only common+, it also varies from state to state. In WA we are dry of any consoles before the jr. Boxed Atari 2600 jrs are quite common, and HES distributed games are hard to find here. I found some obscure Megadrive asian pirate carts yesterday at a cashies, and a boxed megadrive 2 whihc I bought for $19. I also got 5 new atari carts for $3 each Joust, Swordquest, Bowling, Odd labeled Dig Dug and Tutankuman(sp?).Quite good deals, and i'll go back to the same cashies if I want more games (They ha d a few more) and I only bring about $50 when i go to cashies!
