calfranklin #1 Posted June 2, 2009 My son says he's been getting the "can't read disc error" message on his Xbox 360. What's going on and how does he correct this problem?
moycon #2 Posted June 2, 2009 I had that happen to two of my 360's one right after the other. One thing the two had in common was I had recently used the same power supply on them both when they did it. I dont know if that was the cause, but I dont use the power supply anymore. To fix them I had to send them back to MS. They wouldnt read anything. DVDs...games...anything.
nonner242 #3 Posted June 2, 2009 2 of mine died the same way. You can beat the tops for awhile...like a drum...tap it or beat it like I do. But any which way you go its back to Microsoft for repaires. My 3rd is about to take the trip as we speak..lol
Atariboy #4 Posted June 2, 2009 Mine's been getting these lately. Don't want to pay for repairs so I've started just installing games to my hd. Hoping to make it last until the Fall, maybe I'll buy a new 360 then and take this one offline and dedicate it to playing XBLA games while I do the license transfer to get all my content on the new one. Atariboy #5 Posted June 3, 2009 I was thinking maybe I'd buy a hd-dvd drive to solve this issue and tide me over until I buy a more reliable replacement console someday ($50 is cheaper than $120 to have MS fix it to keep a early model 360 going, and gives me an excuse to buy some hd-dvd's to check out). Can someone with the hd-dvd drive like Moycon confirm if you can play 360 games in the drive, or is it just for DVD/HD-DVD video playback? Thanks guys for any information you have on it. moycon #6 Posted June 3, 2009 The HD DVD drive won't play games unfortunately. If you put a 360 game in the HD DVD drive, a message appears telling you to put the disk in the 360 console.
Lord Helmet #7 Posted June 3, 2009 My 360 started acting up like that right before it went RROD. It was having a hard time reading my brand new GH:WT disk around xmas time. Died shortly thereafter.
icbrkr #8 Posted June 14, 2009 I ended up ordering a new DVD drive from Hong Kong - cost me about $40 shipped. Replacement was easy, but you need to remember to purchase the same type drive you already have. The drive is keyed to your system, and you need to remove the old circuit board to put on your new drive. There's ways around it (by reprogramming the firmware) but I didn't want to hassle with it.
