Video #1 Posted June 5, 2009 I got it today from Walmart, I was fixing to be pissed, cause I went and the slot the game was supposed to be in was empty, and I asked, cause while Im a fan, I didn't think it was hugely popular as a series. And apparently they got a new case new games goes in, figures, don't put it where people would expect. Walmart will probably keep the case long enough to get people used to looking there for new games and get rid of it. Anyhow, gotta say, The game pretty much sucks, except for the parts that kick ass. I just wish there were more parts that kick ass, I mean, its only about 99 or 100% ass kicking parts (and when I say ass kicking, I mean my ass ) OK, seriously now, everything (except the ground itself) is destruct-able and I mean EVERYTHING. Hell, even things like roads and many building pads. And, it's more realistic, not that pre-scripted crap like most games use. That means, even if you hit a similar part on a different object, it'll likely break in a different way. And the game really actually encourages you to destroy everything you come across, it's how you get scrap (money) to get your items, or get them upgraded. Not that it really needed that, the destruct-ability of the series is what always drew me to it, not so much because it's necessarily needed, but because it's there. Anyhow, I'm at a friends house, and started playing about 8, and have been playing until about 2, didn't even notice time flying by, until he ran me out so he could go to bed (you bastid) I got through the first area pretty quickly, and am now on Dust (the second area...of six) Dust is by far the biggest area of the game (or looks it on the map) and I'm not even half way through what I need to do on here, and I keep finding new areas in it. Got the game set on pansy, like I always do when starting a new game, and I"m already getting my ass kicked. The enemies will pull back or hide if they are hurt and will comehunt your ass down when your hurt. They don't have the most amazing AI or anything, but it's great for the setup of the game. Anyhow, no Coop or anything, but that seems to be common on these openworld type games. I've tried some of the multiplayer stuff, there's lots of contest games where you take turns trying to destroy as much stuff as possible, don't know about the deathmatch type stuff, but it looks from the lineup of weapons and jetpacks that it would kick total ass, now I gotta find someone around here that's got a copy. Anyhow, awesome game, I'm definitely glad I picked it up, it's great sofar, and I don't see that changing. Only thing I might say bad about it is, the popup. You won't notice it most places due to the dust clouds or hills, but it's definitely there. Otherwise the graphics are pretty good, though some of the textures (or lack of) kinda suck. Still, if you like sandbox type of games, this is really great and I'd say pick it up. It's definitely worth getting.
Lord Thag #2 Posted June 7, 2009 I picked it up. All I have to say is 'wow!' It's monstrously huge, the level of detail to the destructability is astounding (once knocked some supports out of a building and watched it slowly collapse over twenty minutes), and every last bit of damage in a world several times the size of GTA 4 is *permanently* remembered. Plus, you get gads of awesome weapons, vehicles etc. Anyone who hasn't picked this up yet needs to. It's the best open world game I've played to date, and the new geo-mod engine is simply unbelieveable. Nothing like driving a giant dump truck filled with propane tanks and remote detonated mines right into the middle of an enemy base and lighting it off! Not so much as a hiccup of slowdown either. Red Faction is just plain fun.
moycon #3 Posted June 7, 2009 (edited) Wow, I'm going to have to get this. Sounds like a...BLAST. I'm betting Random Terrain would like something like this as well. Edited June 7, 2009 by moycon
Herbarius #4 Posted June 7, 2009 It's quite a while back that I played this, I sure must have it somewhere, maybe I should start searching. OK, seriously now, everything (except the ground itself) is destruct-able and I mean EVERYTHING. Sorry, but not quite... Where the level designers didn't want you to take a shortcut, there are indestructable walls. Also there's such hilarious stuff as destroying a complete wall, but the metal window frame won't give way and therefore float in the air... However, it's quite cool to be able to destroy a lot of stuff, propably with the new physics models etc. this will become popular and usual nowadays. Herbarius #7 Posted June 8, 2009 (edited) Oh, just googled and found out you're propably talking about Red Faction: Guerrilla... I should have known since it's in the Xbox 360 board, but in fact I didn't realize that when I posted my above entry (got through to this thread via the "most recent post" in Modern Gaming from the main forum index). I thought this was about the original Red Faction (2001). In fact I didn't even realize a new Red Faction game was going to come out, nor would I have imagined it, because from what I remember the original two didn't quite live up to the expectations. However, I hope that'll teach you not to ever again adress a sequel by the series' name and just assume everyone knows about which part you're talking! To add something a little more constructive to this post: I don't know the new game, however I've played the first one and was disappointed. For one thing as the promised "you can destroy everything" just was not true, as I said there were parts where you just couldn't get through. Basically the game was almost completely "on rails", which just doesn't fit to the "blow holes in the walls to find your way out" illusion it was trying to create. Also sometimes you'd have stuff like metal window frames floating in the air after you destroyed the wall which seriously hurt suspension of disbelief. I think with the technical improvements we have seen in the last years they could easily correct that issue, like metal frames wouldn't float in midair because of gravity, also a more open world, so you wouldn't feel "on rails" despite the claim you could "destroy everything". In fact I think that's a promise they could not afford not to keep up as easily as 2001 - because gamers knew stuff like that wasn't "normally possible in games", but the bar was raised in that department. So I'm looking forward to read some of your impressions of the new game to get a picture of whether they did a better job this time. Video #8 Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) Sorry, I mis-typed up there, I meant to say excluding the foundation, not including It's quite a while back that I played this, I sure must have it somewhere, maybe I should start searching. I assume your talking about one of the older games, but, yeah, I know what you mean, they have those issues on this game, there are a few pillars and objects that can't be destroyed, but mostly, it can all at least be knocked down. Don't like the invisible walls either, some of which are just out in the middle of an area and make no sense at all. Oh well, it's still an awesome game, and like was posted above, the game pretty much remembers what has been done to the environment, so you can come back later and the mangled buildings are still mangled (with the exception of a few that will "reset" for certain missions, like the "collateral damage" series of missions, Jenkins, you rock) One thing I have a problem with, some of the "transport" missions seem to be uncompleteable, or maybe I just can't find the proper selection of shortcuts, but there are a couple that I've timed the over time I would need to get to the base selected, and would take over a minute extra. Like I said, maybe I just missed a few shortcuts, nothing like just driving off a mountain cause the time savved is worth the damage you take (which seems rather low IMO) in the fall. Video #10 Posted June 21, 2009 Well, I beat the game yesterday, played it for a week, probably put only about 30 hours into it or so, and while it's mostly open world, the missions themselves are pretty linear, Of course, you can drive alternate routs on the missions that want you to drive point a to point b, and what missions you do in what order are pretty open. Really, think Grandtheft Auto, that's pretty much it exactly, missionwise. Also, thermo rockets are cool, one man demolition there, to bad you only get 8 shots, and have to go back to a base in order to reload it (the ammo crates don't cary ammo for this weapon) Other than that, think I missed a couple of weapons, or maybe the tremmor pack and thermomines are only available in the multiplayer? Over all, I'd say that the game is absolutely awesome, go get it now. You won't be dissappointed. Another thing, when you beat the game, there's a bunch of cheats unlocked, that allow for things such as unlimited ammo, high damage, extradebris, stuff like that...and you can use them when you restart the game (though you cannot save if you turn one on) It really kicks up the replayability in another way, allowing you to mercilessly destroy everything in the world, roll into town, wipe everything out, kill everything and not even get scratched MWAHAHAHAHA!!! Actually, I think they unlock all through the game, as you do stuff like kill so many people a certain way, or mine or destroy enough stuff, but I never bother with cheats untill I beat the game, or get out and out stuck. Oh, yeah, it's great, I see me playing this game for a long LONG time, I'm currently playing through again, I never found all 300 crystals to mine, think I found about 220 or so,so those will be a pain in my arse, but other than that, I want to try some missions in different orders, and leave the big bridge intact in the badlands so I can finish some of those transporter missions I couldn't finish earlier. Yeah, it was sweet, gotta go home now and play some more, siezure later.
