Hagstrom KE18 Givin' Me FITS!

Recommended Posts

This keyboard encoder stuff shouldn't be that hard right? Then why is it givin' me fits? :x

I have a Galaga control panel so you right there you know that this should be easy...controls are left, right, fire, one player start and two player start.

I'm using the KE18 and have that MTA100-10-12 wiring harness connected to pins "ground" through "I."

I purchased the Galaga control panel harness and have interconnected it with the MTA100-10-12 via Molex connectors.

I have assigned Galaga the following keys in the MAME ROM config and wired the controls (joystick and buttons) to ground and the respective KE18 pin assignment:

P1 Button = A

P1 Left = C

P1 Right = B

P2 Left = C

P2 Right = B

P2 Button = A

P1 Start = D

P2 Start = E

The only controls that work via the control panel are the P1 start and fire buttons :x

I have the PC set to autologin to XP and run MAME Galaga at startup. So, the only intervention is to "press any key" to boot Galaga. Well, if you leave the control panel plugged into the KE18 during boot NO input peripherals work (i.e. control panel and keyboard). :x

If I boot without the control panel connected to the KE18, I can use the keyboard to press the any key to start Galaga, reconnect the control panel and from there only the fire button and P1 start buttons work. :x

I returned the board to Hagstrom and they said it was OK but honored my request in shipping a totally separate board back.

What the heck is goin' on?

:x :x :x

Hi, Do you have access to a multimeter? I would check all the buttons and the controller to your ground point, and make sure nothing is contacting.

make sure the switches are hooked up normally open (N.O.) not normally closed (N.C.)

Hope that helps.

Thanks...I found the fix and makes me want to kick myself...

The letter assignments are not the key assignments. If I would've RTFM carefully, I would have saved a lot of frustration.

Hagstrom pointed me in the right direction by firing up notepad and seeing what keys were input per each switch. Now I can move on with this project.
