cool interview with the original programmer of montezuma's revenge

I never knew there was an original, huge, unfinished 48k version that all the other versions were scaled down from...

wonder if someone could level-mod the 2600 version into the full 48k old atari version using some of the larger cart size stuff out there nowadays... :)

Wonder how many programmers these days could make it big off an unfinished game that gets cut-down content wise :)

The 48K version on the 8-bit, like you said is "unfinished".

You play it and can complete it to a certain extent, get to the room with the big guy who stamps his feet, and that's it.

The finished cut-down version IMO is somewhat boring and repetitive. The game would have been better if they'd stuck to the philosophy that you get to the "boss level", and defeat him, then repeat the entire game on a higher difficulty.

Problem is, it's not even clear what the initial intention was so far as how you'd deal with this guy... about all you can do now is jump or be on a ladder when he stamps his foot to avoid being killed.

Well the game is called montezuma's revenge, not 'pedro's revenge,' maybe it's not as unfinished as the programmer would lead us to believe. Maybe it is finished, it's just an early subversive game that beats you, instead of you beating it...

Jaeger stated right in the interview that he never finished the game and was struggling with a proper ending, so I highly doubt he would've released the game like this.

That's awesome. Montezuma's Revenge was one of my all-time favorites as a kid back on the old Apple][e. Nice to see Robert is doing well these days, many thanks to him for those amazing journeys through the depths of Montezuma's Revenge. :D
