Krull: Better Web Navigation

Recommended Posts

I want to like Krull, I really do. And for the most part, the game is fun, but that damned spider-web screen is my ruin. I generally lose all of my lives simply trying to get to the door at the top middle of the screen to find out where to go next. Is there some strategy that makes this part easier, or at least not maddening? I've tried going with the flow of the web and then jumping over the strands, but I invariably just get stuck again and finally the spider, sensing my futility, comes and puts me out of my misery. The down side is, 10 minutes of this "gameplay" and the cart is usually sent sailing across the room.

Anybody got any tips for a frustrated Stan? :spidey: :|

I don't have any tips, but I feel exactly the same way about this game. It's a good concept, I'm just not entirely sure it was appropriate for the Atari 2600... can't fault them on being ambitious though but, I agree, after about 10 minutes, I usually put in something else.

Not helpful, but misery loves company, right? :D

If I remember right you just stay run to the middle of the screen and then run straight up. The web should pull you right into the door at the top. I may be wrong though.

Practice timing the jumps. Even with practice, the web is probably the screen in which you will spend the most time.

I had mastered this game back in the day, but haven't played it in ages. the trick was jumping in the places where the web made an X at the center of the X so u had less to contend with and being quick is key also, as soon as the screen starts you need to be moving, I remember having it down to a science at one point where the screen was never really a problem.

oh, also, web direction is key, the web has to be going in a direction favorable to you, otherwise, just wait it out till it is.

yeah, the only problem with waiting is that damn spider gets impatient. I am getting better, I figured that timing was the issue, I am glad to hear that this is the case and that other people aren't just breezing through it.

Thanks for the tips!

My father had taken me to see the movie Krull when it was in the theater, and although I can't say even then it was my FAVORITE movie, I knew of the and liked the arcade game. I was VERY surprised one day while in K*Bees and lo and behold there was a 2600 version of Krull!! I had never heard of such a thing. The best part, the game was only $5!! I was soon playing it, and thought it was pretty kick ass.

From what I recall there was a version of the game game where the webs didn't move at all, then the second level was a piece of cake because as Atari Dog mentioned you could just quickly get to an area where the webs would do all the work since they moved towards the outside of the screen. I'm guessing Stan Jr is playing the version when the webs move towards the inside of the screen? It's been soooo long since I've played this game. Going to have to fire it up and see if it was as well done as I'm remembering!

Just remembered the rest of my quick movement pattern... the other key was running straight up along the left hand side until aligned with the thingy in the center you need to get, and then heading straight for it when the web was with you. Also, iirc, there were certain times the screen would start where the spider could get you no matter what and I had to leave and come back to the screen... as far as the web moving or not moving, is that a difficulty setting?

How do you leave and come back apart from riding out to find the castle? Because if you ride out and no castle, you lose a life or a weapon-thingy!

Weapon 'thingy'? Weapon THINGY? Of all the ... Hey, that ain't just some random shuriken there, Stan. Show some respect! That there is the mighty Glaive! That one old guy (that also played in that crappy Dune movie and wore the bad lipstick) said so! And then the spider lady ate him just for talking about how awesome it was! You can fight off weird laser-eyed robots with it too! And dumbass Cyclops guys will help you if you have it (they tend to get made into rock sandwiches though). Even apartment sized super dark lord types get pwned with The Glaive, especially when they try to pork your girlfriend.

'Weapon thingy' indeed.

*storms off in a huff*
