Legend #1 Posted June 14, 2009 (edited) I'm just curious. When using an emulator, do you prefer a usb gamepad or an actual original 2600 joystick using a stelladaptor ( or usb classic controller from Legacy, which I ordered and was charged for, but still haven't gotten yet ). For playing games on stella or z26? Of course I use my stelladaptor for paddle games and indy 500. Personally though, I prefer a gamepad for all other regular 2600 joystick games. I know I may get a lot of flack for that statement, but it is my honest opinion. I was just wondering what others think( at least those who use emulation primarily). I use a logitech ps sytle usb gamepad to play because it is cheaper and easier. For instance, Raiders of the lost ark requires two controllers. It would cost almost $100+ for two stelladaptors( which are in limited supply) and two original controllers. With the PS style logitech controller, you can easily set the buttons to emulate two directional pads and fire buttons on one easy to hold gamepad. Plus, you can easily assign booster grip buttons to the gamepad (although there aren't that many games which require the booster grip). You can also assign the restart and game select buttons to a 10 or 12 button gamepad. That way, you can continue playing without having to reach for the keyboard. Again, nothing can be substituted for a real paddle, driving, or keyboard controller. Although Keypad controller games are not that many and I could easily use a pc keyboard. -Legend Edited June 14, 2009 by Legend
hurt #2 Posted June 14, 2009 I am normally fine with any controller as long as it is not analog. I find it to sensitive for older games. My rule of thumb is the cheaper the controller the better it will work with older games.
Aegis #3 Posted June 14, 2009 Definitely the CX40 with Stelladaptor - since I got that combo I can't play the VCS games with my XBox 360 gamepad on the PC - just doesn't feel 'right'. I really want to get one of those USB Atari sticks too - hope they make another batch soon!
Video #4 Posted June 14, 2009 Those emulators use USB pads? I've never gotten it to work, it's time to download it again. Yeah, useing D and L for for one player, and abxy and R for two player would be cool for those games like Indiana jones or something, that would be cool! And R/L2 for the extra fire, sticks for analog pong games, and start/select/b/w on the pad, that would rule! I'lll definately have to look into it, as for the adaptor, uh...Most my atari sticks are dead, and I'm already useing third party controlls, even on real hardware, don't think I'm loosing much by getting rid of the stick for a pad. Let the heresy begin. I too prefer a gamepad for my 2600 emulated gaming. If someone produced a 2600 gamepad I'd pick at least a couple up. I've even considered trying to manufacture one, though I suspect us gamepad'ing 2600'ers are in a minority. I'm an Atari 2600 child, but I believe this is one thing that Nintendo got right with the next generation.

Gamepads are fine for most games but try to get low time on Dragster, I don't think it's possible with a gamepad.
