Unusual Game?

Recommended Posts

Came across a game by CBS that I've never heard of before Space Panic, anyone know anything about this game?

It's not an easy job, being a Spaceman.  There is a lot of stress involved.  It's not like the glamorous experience we see in a lot of movies, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was all symphony music and jogging on ceilings (I admit, I fell asleep during the first 15 minutes, but I assume that nothing else happened in the film).  If you were running around in space, you might cut a few, too.

Suddenly, a warning sounded.  I had forgotten about my oxygen supply, and it was dwindling, perhaps due to the fact that I was expelling it from my rectum at a fevered pace.

Horrifying.  From now on, whenever I think about Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and uh... that third guy, who became American heroes by visiting the moon, I will shudder to think how close they may have come to having their heads sucked into their necks by a lack of oxygen.  Gentlemen, I salute you.

That would explain a few things, I was looking through atari 2600 stuff on ebay UK and some guy is selling a bunch of supposed 2600 carts - one of which is Space Panic. I'd never heard of it before & checked on the AA 2600 cart list but to no avail.

I wonder if he has tried to check these games to make sure that they all work? :ponder:

Predating Donkey Kong by at least a year, this is one of the very first climbing games (and one of the best, in my opinion) to appear in arcades. It's a lot of fun -- you dig a hole in the floor, lure a monster so he gets trapped in it, and then cover up the hole on top of him, bashing him down to the next level (and, depending on the monster, usually to his death).

Subsequent arcade games (like Mr. Do's Castle) and popular 8-bit titles (Lode Runner) were all heavily influenced by Space Panic.

A 2600 version would've been fantastic, especially by CBS, since they usually did a great job. It's too bad the ColecoVision rendition needs that damn bulky stock controller (because of the two buttons), or I'd play it a lot more often.
