Illumintated Panels over Control Panel ala Tron and SH

Any ideas as to how one would create an illuminated panel like those used in Tron and Satan's Hollow cabinets?

It's just a backlit piece of plexiglas that has been printed. Same thing as with most marquees.

 

If you want to go the high-tech route though, I might look into electroluminescent panels. We've actually designed some displays and kiosks for clients at work using this technology. It's a thin film that can be cut into shapes and printed that glows brightly when power is applied.

If you used a piece of white plexi you could use an ink sublimation process and then backlight it for effects. Plexi is easy to heat and mold, drill, etc. Could also use an overlay of some sort. The sublimation process requires a printer then a heat transfer. Its permanent and creates a sort of tattoo effect in the material (you can't scratch it off).
