Anyone use Gamefly? Should I do it?

Recommended Posts

I had the 4 at a time sub with GameFly for a long time until I left my job. I have to say I didn't mind the turnaround, given that I had such a big discount on the games I chose to keep (which was practically all of them).

The game discs in general had little to no wear & tear on them and the ones that did, I got a better copy by reporting & returning them.

I would say if you're worried about turnaround on the games, get a 2-4 game subscription and stagger your returns so you always have a game out ready to play.

A long rant about my recent experience with GameFly:

I had been a GameFly user for over 2 years and had been happy as hell with their service. Their turn around times were great, pricing on used games was great, I never received a disk in terrible condition, selection was great, and on and on.

BUT... I quit them last month and don't regret doing so one iota.

I had been on the "Two Games Out At A Time" plan and staggered my returns so that I always had a GameFly disk in my possession. All had been well with my membership for 2 years until around the beginning of February when I noticed that my turn around time on receiving disks was getting longer and longer. It finally got to the point where I had returned one game, played the "2nd Game" I had in my possession for a week and returned it and I now had **NO** games in my possession and hadn't received an Email stating that another game had been shipped to replace "Game #1" that I had returned a week previous.

I contacted GameFly via Email to ask what was up with my not receiving any games. Three days went by and I received no reply. So I called them up, stated my problem, and asked when I would receive a game. The customer service rep told me that A) I had a "limited" list of game in my Queue; B) all of the games in my Queue were new and had long waiting times; C) and that I had to select more games so that they could ship something to me.

My reply: A) my Queue currently had 18 games in it and NEVER fell under 15 games; B) 9 games in my Queue were 6 months old or older and only two games in my Queue had been released in the last 30 days; C) I put games in my Queue that I WANTED TO PLAY, not games I had no interest in so that GameFly could fulfill their obligation.

The customer service rep repeated herself that I needed to put more games in my Queue. I replied that this situation was NOT my problem but a GameFly problem because it appeared that GameFly kept recruiting new customers but didn't increase the number of copies of a title to reflect the increase in customers. I used the following example:

I was interested in the PS3 game Afrika but was not sure I wanted to buy it, so put it in my Queue the minute the game was released in October. I never received the title and its availability never changed from "Long Waiting Time". The only reason I hadn't received the game in the three and a half months since its release and putting it in my Queue was because it was apparent that GameFly didn't order enough copies to cover any demand for the game (which I'm sure is NOT high) and/or the two or three copies they did have for rental had been either lost/damaged and GameFly had not replaced them.

Further, I told them that I was also a member of NetFlix and that I could put ANY new release title in my Queue and receive it almost immediately, even though NetFlix had a far, far, far greater number of members. The difference between GameFly and NetFlix, I told the rep, was that NetFlix increased stock as customers went up.

The rep told me that if I put more varied titles in my Queue that GameFly could ship games to me faster. I replied that I paid for "Two Titles Out At A Time", that I had NO titles in my possession, and that GameFly was not fulfilling its contract obligation. I told the rep that if I did not receive an Email from GameFly TODAY that two games were being shipped to me, that I would cancel my membership and file a complaint with the BBB.

I waited two days and still received no Email that any games were being shipped to me. I called GameFly back up, cancelled my membership, and filed a complaint with the BBB.

For over two years I had fantastic service with GameFly and that suddenly went to shit. GameFly wasn't interested in helping me with my problem and I refused to pay for something that I was not receiving. GameFly can be a great service when it works; it stopped working for me and I hope that other members don't receive the same level of Customer Service that I encountered.

It's money well spent. I've been able to test out games I would have otherwise purchased, and regretted later. I've never had GameFly send me the wrong games, but know this... it will send you ANYTHING that's on your Gamer Q, even if it's way down the list. Ignore what you're told by the company and keep your Gamer Q short, to eight games or less.

Every game I've been sent works without fail, but it will take a while to receive new games if you're in the midwest (about a week from when you send a game back). Both GameFly locations are on either coast so if you live in the Boston/New York/Maine area or the California/Washington/Oregon area you should receive your games fairly quickly.

Definitely do this... it will save you money in the long run and keep your collection fit and trim.

Here's my theory. I play A LOT of games. From September until Christmas I probably buy at least 10 games for the 360 and Wii. Throw in the good new releases throughout the year and, well, it's a very expensive hobby.

So, for the price of 4 Xbox 360 games, I could get all the games I want (2 at a time) from Gamefly for an entire year.

This seems incredibly logical to me. Probably too good to be true?

My question is, why am I not doing this?

What would stop me:

Not being able to get new releases quickly (within a week).

Always getting scratched or unplayable discs.

Crap service. (Sending wrong games, no mailing envelopes, etc.)

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

i use it and haven't had any problems. lately i've had them send me games just so i can purchase them. they're sending me the newest ratchet&clank and i have a $5 off coupon. the game and mint case instructions will cost me $32 as opposed to $55 at gamestop or like $40 from an amazon seller.
