Sega Nomad Type device coming out July 25th fro $50

Sounds good as long as it's built good.

It says "also includes an SD card that can be used to play “licensed games that have been downloaded and saved to an SD card using a special development cart.” I wonder if that means it will only load roms in some proprietary format.

I've been following this at sega-16, and it's a hack waiting to happen. I'm definitely sold on it.

The only thing iffy is the price and D-pad. Definatly has to be better than the PSP or else I'm not getting it.

I heard through the grapevine that this SD slot stuff is not true. It would be sweet if it was, but I think this may be misinformation. We shall see. Has anyone ever got their hands on this Innex version at a show or anything?

I wish Sega would release a Flashback-type console with a bunch of their old SG-3000 and SMS titles, and actually release it. That would be fun.

That's actually a ripoff of the Hyperkin version which is the one with the SD card capability.

I just looked up Hyperkin and found their site but no Sega handheld. There's an NES one but with no SD card compatibility.

I finally was able to access the site and this new nomad like device looks cool. 50 dollars seem's a little steep but if it's high quality I will buy one, who is going to be selling this? I have my doubts about the quality, however, I wouldn't be surprised if it's cheaply made in which case I will pass.

One question for Sega experts. Did the original Nomad play Master System games too? If it did that is news to me. Oh and I wonder if this thing can play standard downloadable roms? You could fill one sd card with every Genesis game ever released.

Hyperkin's is suppose to support software dev (with the Firebox Diamond at least), but the SD card was intended for the release of new digital games (with SEGA on board supposedly).

The Nomad can't play SMS games, the Power Base converter doesn't work with it because the circuit for switching it to run via the Z80 wasn't present.

This is not an attack on you. However, I see this comment all the time about clones. People want a high quality item, but don't want to pay for it. $50 is less than most modern video games nowadays, so if you expect it to be PSP or DS quality you will be let down. Also remember, $50 may be MSRP...however the company that makes them has the make a profit, the company that wholesales them has to make a profit (if you aren't dealing directly with the manufacturer), and the company that retails them has to make a profit. There's only so much quality that you can squeeze out of $50 for a niche market novelty item.

I'm sure Hyperkin, Innex (aka Retro-bit), etc. would make high quality items if many people would buy them. However most people aren't willing to pay over $50 for a clone no matter the quality. Now I know there are quite a few people on this board that may be willing to pay $100+ for a high quality clone, however many people on this board are much more hardcore than the average joe that just wants to play Super Mario Bros. again.

Granted some of these companies make some design decisions when it comes to clones that boggle the mind. I cannot defend those by any means. However you can't have it both ways. I wish you could, it would make my job much easier.

Yes new games will be developed by AtGames (not by Sega). AtGames is the brains behind the operation, based on passed history I am very weary of this. However I'm pretty sure the built-in games will all be Sega licensed games.

I wish Sega would just develop the hardware themselves, but they obviously have zero interest in ever making hardware again and seem content with just letting other companies do it.

Interesting. But it looks to me like having the six buttons in that pattern will be really uncomfortable... I'll have to try one.
