Atari RAM/ROM Testor?

Recommended Posts

My brother was really into atari and he left me all his things after getting married. One thing is an ATARI 2600 ram/rom tester? Anyone ever hear of it, first time I ever searched Google and found zero. Any ideas?

Sorry you got ripped off, but you don't have to lie about it

Yeah, I was thinking "that sounds a lot like that 'ROM tester' on SG..."

I bid on it myself, but only 20 bucks.. I was very very surprised that freaking high

I was surprised too, especially because it is just the internals of a six switch:

Hey thanks for welcome. First let me say, it will either be a 42 year old posting with this name or my 14 year old nephew heh. Thus this post. (He means well.) Yea I purchased the weirdo thing on shopgoodwill, more for the curiousity than anything else, I've been accumulating a lot of my ATARI crap back since I was a kid. I sell a lot of newer systems on Ebay so the pricing is pretty relative since I just part the lot out and re-Ebay it. There was a pretty beat up miner cart in the lot as well as a perfect loose dare diver (which I needed) so I'm happy.

It is more fun for me to try and make the thing work than anything else, I'm going to try the sixer powersupply on it (maybe a 9v first) and see how it goes. It has a screw on coaxial type tv connect on the back as well, little different than the F connect thing. With two joystick ports. I agree though, it looks like someone crammed a whole system in a tiny area. Very cool mod, but not a ram rom test thingy, we'll see.

Hey thanks for welcome.

Welcome aboard to you and your nephew. Its nice to have 14 y.o. kids interested in Atari. Dont take too much offence to any early hostility. There are so many scammers that come to these boards on a regular basis. The regular users are a little wary of anyone that doesn't stack up 110%...

Good luck firing up this little contraption. Lets see what it does :ponder:

I suppose any console could be termed a ROM tester.

I actually kinda like this little thing (not $100 worth though :(). It could have been done much more cleanly, but the stripped down shielding with a little extra box added to the box for the rest of the stuff has potential. :ponder:

I'm wondering where the Goodwill folks came up with the name "ROM tester". Was it labeled somewhere?

Yea there is no writing on this thing whatsoever, I looked all over. I look on goodwill a lot and I came to the conclusion that some know exactly what they are doing (in it for the money or to rip people off) while others just throw stuff up their for the heck of it. You get lucky when you bid on stuff that says like.... "98 ATARI Carts in a box"... with just like a blurry pic of the box.. (I don't want to give away which ones know what they are doing and which ones don't) You can tell which Goodwill locations are wise to rare carts and not because some actually list the carts separate.. or they supply really detailed pics of the stacked carts... there are literally 100's of locations so just filter them out and you can get some really cool finds...

Hope you guys aren't bidding against me.. hehhh...

But yea where did they get the idea of RAM/ROM Testor... I can't picture grandma at Goodwill saying that out loud..

Yes, I like it too, but I agree $100 is too much. I like how "raw" it looks and like some... like something that belongs in an old submarine ;)

Any chance you could try if it works?

Any pointers before I screw this thing more than I have to..

I'm using a regular 9v adapter on this unit. (I'm using an universal one because the standard 2600 9v doesn't fit, it was modded.. )

The unit was modded for video, there is a F-Coaxial mod on the back so I only screw in the coaxial cable straight to the TV.

When I turn power on it is apparent that it works, the screen turns black and I do see a fuzzy blurry version of Donkey Kong in the background, the game also starts when I press the controller button.

But it acts as if it is set for the wrong channel like the unit is set for 3 and I have it on 4 etc. I'm pretty sure I tried every different combo multiple times.

I guess what I'm asking is what part would need to be changed if video was blown.. I'm good at soldering (I repair laptops for a living) I'm just not familiar with ATARI parts.

Thanks guys.
