Cupcakus #1 Posted October 6, 2002 Has anyone achieved max rank on Space Shuttle... I just got Pilot and was immensley satisfied with myself. I barely made it though as far as fuel is concerned. I'm wondering how you can get in with 6 docks and 7500 fuel left...
buddpaul #2 Posted October 7, 2002 How odd it is that Space Shuttle is my favorite 2600 game, but I've only spent maybe a grand total of 20 minutes playing it?!
Cupcakus #3 Posted October 7, 2002 I dont see how it could be your favorite then :-) I've logged hundreds of flight hours
Stella'sGhost #4 Posted October 7, 2002 I only ever made Pilot, but its been a very long time since I seriously attempted to make Commander, maybe 10 years. I think its supremely hard, but most likely doable, I can not offer any tips. I bought this game new in 198?, I still have the box, overlays and manuals. I played it for a long time, I couldn't believe this was the same atari that also had bowling...
Cupcakus #5 Posted October 7, 2002 I still don't understand why I never had any overlays... I still have the box and everything... but no overlays... so upsetting.
Cupcakus #6 Posted October 7, 2002 What's also wierd is that Commander is not even in the list of ranks at the end. It makes me wonder what it will say when you make commander. Gotta keep trying........
Stella'sGhost #7 Posted October 7, 2002 You know, I took a look at the manual again for fun and I did make it past Pilot, I made it to Payload Specialist, maybe even higher, but I can't remember, I only know that I had spent alot of time on this game. I can't find some of my overlays, I only have the one describing the six parts of the mission :launch, oribit, docking, deorbit burn,re-entry, final approach. This one is meant to be like a quick reference guide and you are supposed to lay it down on the atari itself. The other overlay was smaller and if I remember right it went right over just the switches of the atari, with holes for them and the cartridge so that you could easily see what switch did what. It kind of looked hi-tech like a control panel I think. There are probably pictures of it somewhere around here. They are made of cardboard, with several colors. Maybe you get a special screen if you make it to commander. Crap, now I'm going to have to solve this this week! I'll let you know what happens! Unless someone else knows...... Osmeroid #8 Posted October 7, 2002 The person to ask about Space Shuttle is Nukey Shay (where for art thou? ) He gave me some good tips about SS in a previous thread.
Cupcakus #9 Posted October 7, 2002 Payload Sp is the worst rank, Mission Sp is the next, Pilot is the third which has taken me 10+ years to finally achieve, and Commander is the best.

Yup they are http://www.atariage.com/overlay_page.html?...wareLabelID=466 I dont have the capability to print these and make my own, so i just made mine out of thick paper and put packing tape over it to keep it from tearing, so it isnt the original but it works just the same
bobafett07728 #11 Posted October 7, 2002 Cupcakus My Space Shuttle was bought new in box also(back in the hayday), and did not come with any overlays. I actually didn't know there was any until I stumbled across them on this site. My Space Shuttle is the generic blue label that came out later, I believe. My game also came with plain old text instructions, b&w and boring. This is the same case with my Enduro, and River Raid, that were purchased at the same time. All three have the blue label, and cheapo instructions. Maybe this version didn't come with the overlays? Activision ran out, and didn't feel like producing them anymore? Who knows? I will say though, that pre-overlay I couldn't figure out the game for the life of me, but post-overlay I can actually play the game, and it rules. That's exactly what I have... no overlays and a B&W manual, with Activision blue label. Memorizing the console switches was easy, but I always had to use the manual for the de-orbit burn procedure, so now my manual is all mangled from me using it so much. I would have killed for overlays... Oh well, I have it all memorized now, I'm a walking overlay.
+Mitch #13 Posted October 7, 2002 Do you guys that didn't get the overlays have the text label version or picture label version? I know Activision got cheap after the crash. My picture label copy came with all the overlays. Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
Cupcakus #14 Posted October 7, 2002 It's the blue text label version...
Fretwobbler #15 Posted October 7, 2002 The overlays arent that hard to come by, I got mine for £1.with the cart. They are well worth it and enhance the action a lot
Stella'sGhost #16 Posted October 9, 2002 Payload Sp is the worst rank, Mission Sp is the next, Pilot is the third which has taken me 10+ years to finally achieve, and Commander is the best. Yeah, I got it backwards, so my post from above is backwards... I made Mission Sp, and I can't remember if I made Pilot, its been too long. Its a very tough "game" to master. I'm wondering how you can get in with 6 docks and 7500 fuel left... Nobody really knows for sure if it is actually attainable (without cheating, that is). Back in the day, I managed to land with that much fuel after 5 dockings, but never managed to do it with 6 (the 6th satellite is very erratic and you need to move with it for the docking to register). Godzilla #18 Posted November 13, 2002 man i loved that game, played it for ages. i know i got to what i thought was the highest rank listed in the manual back in the day. its funny, over my many moves back in the day, i lost my overlay, and bought a new in box 2600 space shuttle to get the overlay back, and it had the 5200 cart inside. bizzare. still dont have an overlay for my 6 switch, but i did get a 4 switch overlay
StanJr #19 Posted November 13, 2002 Ok, I LOVE everything about this game, but I cannot even complete the stupid training mission. I can get into orbit, but from there I cannot dock with the satellite, nor can I even find it! I follow the instructions to a "T", but I must be doing something wrong! AAAAAARRRGGGHHHHH! And yet I still love this game....
Cupcakus #20 Posted November 14, 2002 If you can get into orbit OK, and remember to open the cargo bay doors so you don't overheat, All you have to do is set all axis to zero to dock. It takes practice :-) When the Z access starts floating, forget about it :-)
