SINGLE TOOTH #1 Posted July 18, 2009 Looking to find a 486 based computer. Please let me know what you have? Love you, Andy
nathanallan #2 Posted July 18, 2009 Does it have to be 486 based? I have an early Pentium here that you can have for shipping plus a buck. Needs win reinstalled, and not sure if I want to mess with 95 for it.
AtariLeaf #3 Posted July 18, 2009 This is something you should be able find locally for next to nothing. People throw computers like that in landfills anymore. Great for classic PC gaming though.
nathanallan #4 Posted July 18, 2009 Totally agreed, check your local thrift shops, it'll save you some shipping and these things are HEAVY.
SINGLE TOOTH #5 Posted July 18, 2009 Please believe me when I tell you I have been scouring for a while. Craigslist, thrifts, friends, nada. I think there is only 1 thrift shop that even accepts computers anymore and they wanted $70 for some POS Pentium 2 system. The 486 selection dried up big time........ Getting desperate here. +poobah #6 Posted July 18, 2009 Do you need the whole computer? I'm sure I have a couple 486 boards that I could setup with graphics and I/O cards. you'd just need to slap the stuff in an AT case.
SINGLE TOOTH #7 Posted July 18, 2009 Do you need the whole computer? I'm sure I have a couple 486 boards that I could setup with graphics and I/O cards. you'd just need to slap the stuff in an AT case. Whole systems not required. I could cobble something together if needed. If shipping, definatly no monitors
AtariLeaf #8 Posted July 18, 2009 Its too bad, I donated boxes and boxes of old 486 and early pentium hardware a couple months ago. It was just sitting in my basement. I'll have a look and see if I overlooked anything. Its possible. I think Gollum's still down there looking for that stupid ring.
tjb #9 Posted July 19, 2009 Have you checked Goodwill? We have a Goodwill computer store here in town. They usually have a boatload of older systems. I was thinking of picking up an old XT compatible to play CGA games on. tjb

nathanallan #12 Posted July 22, 2009 I do have this P133 that needs drivers for shipping only plus a buck. It's just that it's heavy as anything and shipping would be expensive. I'll look tonight and see if I have any true 486s left. But be warned, they will all be quite heavy to ship.
gdement #13 Posted July 22, 2009 Unfortunately, I think 486 boards are pretty hard to find nowadays. I remember looking for those on ebay like ~1yr ago and noticed they were going for steep prices. They've moved beyond junk status and are now treated as collectibles. Pentiums are far more common, and they're also more friendly to modern components. ATX, PCI, Ultra-ATA, etc. 486's are just old enough to be incompatible with pretty much everything. I used to have a junk 486 board, wish I still had it. It was an infamous PCChips model and never stable, but I'd have fun trying to stabilize it knowing what I know now.
+poobah #14 Posted July 22, 2009 Found four '486 boards in the Poobah Museum of Technology (hall closet of no return) 3 have cpus on them, I will throw an video card on them and see what we can see. Haven't found any I/O cards yet.
nathanallan #15 Posted July 22, 2009 a person on vintage-computer is saying he has a pile of 486 machines, looking for homes, I have passed a note to him to get back with me if he wants to get one to you. We'll see. LINK to thread at vintage-computer
BigO #16 Posted July 22, 2009 I keep seeing ads for a local electronics recycler on Craigslist. They're likely in the business of extracting gold, but maybe you could catch a 486 going into a place like that. In terms of recycling, I think re-using is better than scrapping. I may still have a 486 laying around somewhere. Surely somebody in your locale has one they'd give up. Post a want ad on Craigslist?
lgallair #17 Posted July 24, 2009 Hey, if you want a 486 computer I have one you might want. It's a 486 DX66 with 128 MB ram, 10 GB HD, 3.5" disk drive, 16X CD rom drive. Been thinking of tossin' it since it's no use for me. Pay shipping at it's yours. I'm located in C'town, PEI, Canada. Let me know if you're interested. nathanallan #18 Posted July 25, 2009 I checked and I have no more 486's that don't have plans. I do still have that 133mhz.
BigO #19 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) I just found a MB with a 486/SX-25 in my scrap pile. Tested and working. 3 ISA slots (1 VESA), a couple of PCI slots. If you're wanting ISA slots, I have another SX-25 + board with like 6 ISA slots. I'll have to find my sack-o-SIMMs before I can test that one. Yours for the price of shipping if you're interested. Does size matter? Edited July 26, 2009 by BigO
