brak #1 Posted August 3, 2009 hey all. i found a game gear this morning locally for $8. but the batteries leaked inside both battery compartments and even leaked into the cartridge slot. they're selling it untested, as-is. is it even worth it and salvagable? thanks! keilbaca #2 Posted August 3, 2009 Yep, its worth it, I think. Its a cheap game gear that just needs taken apart and cleaned up. I'd take any console that cheap if that's all that's wrong with it.
monzamess #3 Posted August 3, 2009 On the other hand, what's your time and aggravation worth? Are you pretty sure it will work and be acceptable when you're done? How much does a nice Game Gear sell for? (not much last time I checked)
Baloo #4 Posted August 3, 2009 Game Gears are a dime a dozen.
nathanallan #5 Posted August 3, 2009 Resell value is low, but if it were me I'd get it on general principal. Might as well say Space Bananas on it. I'd get it to fix and play. My question would be When was the last time you saw any Game Gear for sale in your area?
brak #6 Posted August 3, 2009 (edited) thanks for all the replies everyone. game gears are not exactly a dime a dozen here, but they're not rare by any means. i see them roughly once every few months in the wild, at shops or yard sales/flea markets, and weekly on craigslist. with the amount of corrosion i found, i think all six batteries must have ruptured. worst i've ever seen. after some thinking, i came to the conclusion that $8 is too much for all the work i'm gonna have to do. Wickeycolumbus #7 Posted August 3, 2009 Game Gears are pretty common in my area too. I don't buy them if they are more than a couple dollars.
STICH666 #8 Posted August 3, 2009 Sega stuff has been popping up in general around here.....except Master System stuff.
warmachine #9 Posted August 4, 2009 You might be kicking yourself if you come across a working game gear with no battery covers.
fiddlepaddle #10 Posted August 4, 2009 You might be kicking yourself if you come across a working game gear with no battery covers. Yeah, battery covers are probably the rarest part. On the other hand, it's pretty easy to accumulate "enough" Game gears over a relatively short period of time.
