4bit sample converter for mac?

Recommended Posts

I know that this has been asked once before but is there any good sample editor where I can export to 4bit raw samples on OSX?

I have using Audacity but I can convert samples to 4000 Hz but can not export in 4bit mode or 8bit where I can easily convert to 4bit then?

Wavepad will export in 8 bit. I use it with wav2cas. There is a free version and the "masters" verision. I use the free one ;-)

Am I missing something? Couldn't you just write a mac app to open the *.wav file and strip the top 4 bits from the word length in the file (8 or 16 bits) and save them out to another file in whatever format you need (packed nybbles etc.)?

EDIT: 1000th post and its in the A8 section :( :-o  Damn!

Plus you can band-filter and normalize the input first and quadratic rescale and dither the output. Sounds better than just linear resampling and chopping of the least significant bits. That really matters if you go to something like 4kHz/4-bits. Increasing the volume of the source material and running through a compressor/limiter also helps sometimes to get a little bit more bang for a bit.
