Philflound #27 Posted August 13, 2009 I always love the people on here who flame the newbies. [...] I'm really getting fed up with the lack of respect by some people on AA. Phil I won't presume to speak on behalf of the people who you think are flaming luckyinheritor, but do you think that some of the "lack of respect" that you perceive might be related to the perception that this is a situation of yet another individual showing up on AA to sell a stash of Atari in the hopes of significant financial windfall contrary to that individual's professed interest in Atari and/or video games? I wasn't pertaining to you Zwack, but I don't think it matters why anyone comes here. If they are here one time in their lives or they continually come back. If they come only to sell games or they come to share their personal experiences playing them, they are here and they deserved to be treated kindly. You had a nice response for her, with some good advice without condemning her, or calling her dude, or whatever. First impressions mean everything. Maybe she'll sell the whole thing and then in a couple of years express interest again and decide to "buy back" what she sold and more. You really think she'd want to come here. I don't always trust everyone on here, and sometimes put my doubts, but when I do write that, it's usually about whether the person has the "rare" game(s) they say they have. And I usually put in something like "hopefully I'm wrong", or "don't take this the wrong way" and explain how people come on here claiming things and it turns out false. I try to put both sides for the poster to see why I have my doubts, not just attack them. Anyway, I've exhausted what I'm saying on this topic. Difference is, we've grown accustomed to such ill manners, lack of respect & decorum in America, that most accept it as part of their diction. (according to them) they feel no obligation to be nice to users new to NG.com so they troll and flame practically everyone. It's sort of like the internet's version of Hell... If you have a thick skin you may find some people that see eye-to-eye with you but with so many other, better forums available, I feel NG.com is doomed to stay stuck in the vicious cycle it's currently in. Edit: Oh yeah, there is very little Neo-Geo discussion there. Ironically, only the new users do much of any discussion on the arcade hardware. Most of the older users (who have been there for over 5 years) just use the site for social talk. Edited October 21, 2009 by Koopa64

Dudette... lol couldn't help but think of Smurfette there. lmao And just what the hell is wrong with being a stoner, surf punk, skate punk, or combination of the 3 from California?!? Man, you just made a whole bunch of stereotyping assumptions against a whole entire group of people based on the most shallow of observations. Seriously... you basically just said, "low-to middle class people from California who surf, and listen to punk generally smoke weed". Cool. Have any general observations about Christians, or Asians, or African Americans, too? "Clueless" is also a part of the SoCal surf/skate punk slang, BTW dude... pretty low-to-middle class of you to say such a thing... Just sayin... The amazing thing is that at least here in the North-Eastern midwest, there seem to be a lot of people who make these kind of conclusions without realizing how potentially offensive it is. I had a woman at a party say, "You're from California, so you've probably smoked a lot of marijuana". I responded, "No, I was more of a heroin kind of guy, myself... although I did enjoy some occasional acid". Which of course totally freaked her out and made her stay away from me the rest of the evening. Lawd... Edited October 21, 2009 by Paranoid

Ugh... guilty as charged. Just tryin' to relate man! :-) The amazing thing is that at least here in the North-Eastern midwest, there seem to be a lot of people who make these kind of conclusions without realizing how potentially offensive it is. I never said ALL and would never contextually. If you're that easily offended, you obviously fit the demographic and/or have waaaay too much time on your hands needlessly defending said demo for whatever sad reason. Is this a personal war you battle everyday? We all have them I guess. Perhaps because some of your loved ones or friends may fit that description? I don't know and personally, I normally wouldn't care. Just making an observation based on MANY personal and professional experiences. Facts are facts (no matter how hard some people try to cover them up) and it's no secret California harbors a very large percentage of alternative lifestyles. Deal with it or move. In any event, the country is by and large a mess right now because of all this counter-productive politically correct hullabaloo. Ironic and hypocritical that many folks that lead or want to lead alternative lifestyles continue to preach their agenda in our faces all_day_long, but as soon as you present an idea (especially as they become confused by the facts) or have an opinion that differs from theirs... lookout! BTW: I know lots and lots of people that smoke pot. Some very close to me. All of them are very "consumed" by their lifestyle choice. In other words, because of their choice to partake in that particular "hobby", it runs their lives in ways they're completely in denial of. It took me years to convince some of them that I am personally not judging their choices (funny how when you don't do something like this with them, others automatically make assumptions of you!), but when they come to me for help or whatever, the conversation usually makes a 360˙right back to why they are in the position they are in (the dope of course). When I say every stoner I know behaves or conducts their lives a certain way, I am merely making an observation based on what's presented time and time again. Personally, I wish they'd legalize the stuff already. Taxing and regulating it would be great and would subsidize many things. Sorry if the quality would no longer be as "good", but sheesh. lol It would also more than likely, create this counter-culture of lazy underachievers (more so than we have now) content living a mediocre life which could allow for better and more qualified contributors of society to fill positions we desperately need them to fill (retail customer service, banking & restaurants quickly come to mind). To the OP, sorry for taking this conversation one toke over the line :-) Edited October 21, 2009 by save2600

Maybe you know many people that smoke weed, but are not "stoners" in that sense, and you don't even know they do it. (Did you ever ask? Or even if you did, they might say no, given that it's illegal.) I don't really know how it is over in the USA, but from my experience in Germany/Europe most people I know that smoke weed don't make a "lifestyle" out of it, yes some are, but these are the more juvenile types, who consider it "cool" to smoke weed... Also won't most weed smokers, myself included (oh no, I just outed myself ), assume you've got something against them just because you don't smoke. In fact on several occasions (partys, etc.) there have been weed smokers and non (weed) smokers together, some drinking their beer, others smoking joints, and going along quite well. Of course there are always intolerant people, that won't even listen to what you've to say because its "all just the drugs talking" or something like that. Ironically, those people are more often than not quite heavy drinkers, so there's lots of hypocricy involved. Oh and back to the original "dude" topic - did any of you consider there might be regional differences in the use of that term... that it could be a quite "normal" word in some regions, while mainly used by "stoners" or even as a derogatory term in other regions? Yes, agree on all your points. Great observation of nuance going on there Herbarius. Regional and lifestyle differences for sure between the two topics. It's all a matter of choice, or not the interventionists will tell you. One also needs to remember that America is the land of excess. I'm amazed when I meet someone I didn't previously know that casually or recreationally smokes weed because they're not as big a user. This may not be true across the board, but seems to me that the more you use, the more you look like you use. And I'm not talking about their clothing choice either. lol Same goes for the often "high profiled" and usually white collared cocaine user. Or the alcoholic. At the end of the day, I guess I'm in awe of just how many people are into drugs here in the States. The figures are staggering and I suspect that officially, they're rather conservative.
