Wickeycolumbus #2 Posted August 12, 2009 I haven't heard of a few of those either. It would be cool if they made a new Road Rash game though

triverse #5 Posted August 12, 2009 Different gamers, a lot of the gamers playing now only just started with a 360 or a PS3 or a Wii. No one is really interested in learning about some of the great groundbreaking games that came before. I recognize all of those games and remember reading reviews for them in magazines. Course I was born in 76 and started gaming in 81 or 82 with an Atari 2600 that my father bought my siblings and me (I still have the Maze Craze game that I got way back then). Been gaming since then on just about everything that I could afford.
Classic Pac #6 Posted August 12, 2009 You want to hear something even sadder I am on one board where most of them think the New Super Mario Bros Wii game is brand new, and not based upon any classic game.

Emehr #8 Posted August 12, 2009 (edited) Games get the short end of the stick in comparison to movie or music collections. They're bought, played, and sold off. When the newest and greatest console comes out, the old one gets sold off and the games it played remain only as a memory. After a few console generations, new gamers come of age and are never exposed to many of those older games. This type of thing doesn't generally happen with one's music or movie collection. Sure, someone may not like a CD anymore and sell it off but there isn't that "let's unload the whole deal!" like there seems to be with games when a new console comes out. Also, movies and music transcend their respective mediums. When a new storage format comes out, movies and music are re-released on that new format to be happily bought up by consumers. Does this happen with games? No! In fact, there's this perception that "old games" are "yesterday's news". The industry has consumers convinced that only the newest and greatest console can satisfy their gaming needs; that the older games are somehow irrelevant. So it's not surprising to me that many of these kids (I'm going to lay it on the line and assume these are pre-teens voting) haven't heard of Populous or Wing Commander. How would they have ever played or heard about these games? Except for the extremely obscure, most movies and music from the dawn of their respective industries can be experienced on modern electronics. How many living rooms, though, still have the capability to play Ultima? I think it's great that the modern consoles have a means to buy older games. That's a step forward in broad exposure and preservation. Edited August 12, 2009 by Emehr
jboypacman #9 Posted August 12, 2009 I think this shows the age of a lot of the people that uses Gamefaqs sad but true folks.
StoneAgeGamer #10 Posted August 12, 2009 I played a lot of Road Rash, and being that a love theme parks I loved the original Theme Park game.
vdub_bobby #11 Posted August 12, 2009 (edited) It isn't as bad as it first appears - "I don't recognize" was the most popular single choice, but a pretty large majority (65%) have heard of those games. It is somewhat shocking that that many people on a video games website haven't heard of Ultima, or Wing Commander, or Populous, or Road Rash - I mean, c'mon, those were very popular, very influential games. Albert #14 Posted August 13, 2009 That just makes me feel old. I've played every one of those "properties" except Theme Park (which of course I've at least "heard of"). Some I've vested a considerable number of hours in, such as the Ultima, System Shock and Wing Commander games. And that's a lot of games when you count all the Ultima and Wing Commander titles produced. ..Al
Sgt.Pepper1983 #15 Posted August 13, 2009 It makes me feel old when I realize that I know people who are younger than some of my games and systems. That's why I'm so glad that Sonic 2 is my 7 year old nephew's favorite game.

CGQuarterly #17 Posted August 13, 2009 Gamefaqs doesn't sadden me at all. It serves as the manure pile for all of the flies that are the young and moronic gamers. The squeaky high-pitched voices you hear ineptly cussing you out on XBL? That's where they hang out, and I say better there than here. They start getting interested in things like Road Rash and Ultima, and next thing you know they are logging on to Atari Age and bringing down the average IQ. I was just thinking today about some of the teenagers that post on these classic gaming boards (not just here, but who are part of the community in general.) Back when I was active on DP, we had several veteran members who were not yet old enough to drive, but because of their behavior they were not treated any differently than anyone else, either on the boards or in person at events like CGE. Sometimes one of the little morons wanders in here, but they seem to disappear quickly enough. It really reinforces than this community is blind to such things as age, race, sexual orientation, etc., and that we are all judged by how we carry ourselves here and how we treat others. If only the same were true IRL. Chris

Chris amen. those are the same little turds who literally wish you dead if you don't think call of duty is the best game ever made. i have no respect for people who have zero grasp of gaming history yet will fight you tooth and nail about current gaming bullshit. gfaqs isn't for gamers, its for loser fanboys who like to bitch more than a teen girl on their period. iswitt #20 Posted August 13, 2009 I used to be on gamefaqs until I discovered classic gaming. I'm only 18 but I have soooooo much respect for all the older games. I didn't just discover classic gaming (as your post seems to convey), but I am still around your age (20). I feel that it's not really the kids' fault that they don't know what some of that stuff is. I mean, you walk into the local game store, and you have the newest upcoming titles shoved in your face everywhere you look. Heck, some kids couldn't even tell you that Perfect Dark Zero was a launch title for the 360. It's old news, they just focus on what's coming. By the time the new Halo game comes and they buy it, the moment they put it in their console it will be meaningless because some new ultra sweet new amazing game is around the corner. So, they don't really have time to pay attention to older games on the console, let alone from the 70's or 80's! I know they used to push vintage games heavily back in their time, but it seems to crazy what lengths they go to now.
yuppicide #21 Posted August 13, 2009 First off, I'm not a fan of EA, but that having said what would I like to see new game of? MOTOR CITY ONLINE! They should at least sell the source to someone so we can enjoy it and make new stuff for it, etc.
