Marvel VS Capcom 2 + Gamestop = ARRGGGHH!

Recommended Posts

I went to Gamestop after work today, to pick up none other than Marvel VS Capcom 2 for the PS3. For those in the know, it's not a real retail disk, but an empty case they are giving out with cover art that has a voucher coupon within for the PSN game. My convo with the two clerks is as below. It will forever be burned into my brain. Any Dreamcast lover/owner or any self respecting fan of video games in general, may want to proceed with caution. Ok, here we go:

Me: "Hi, I'm here to pick up Marvel VS. Capcom 2 for the PS3... the empty case with voucher."

Clerk 1 "Ah yes" (gets game case out as I proceed to get my debit card out).

Me: "I'm so excited, I've been waiting for this for what seems like forever!"

Clerk 1: "Really? We just got these in today, we had no idea what the hell they even were"

Me: "Oh yea, they've had articles online about this for a long time, and they just announced the case about a week or two ago. It's supposed to even come with an instruction booklet in the case!"

Clerk 1: "There is no instruction booklet, look through the clear case from the top"

Me: (Looks) "Wow, that's odd. Oh well, I just want the physical case for my collection. While I love downloadable games, the collector in me has to have something physical, ya know?"

Clerk 2: "If you want the physical version, just get the 70 dollar PS2 or Xbox verson"

Me: "Well, no need, I already have the Dreamcast version.. I just want this since it's in widescreen and in HD"

Clerk 2: (Suddenly gets very loud and bitchy) "Marvel VS Capcom 2 was never on the Dreamcast (!), you're thinking of Marvel VS Capcom. The second game came out on PS2 and Xbox."

Me: "Uhhhh, no, the original was on the Dreamcast first... it was one of the most popular games for the system. The PS2 and Xbox versions are remakes"

Clerk 1: "Yea, he's right.. it came only out of the PS2 and Xbox"

Me: "No it didn't. It ranks up there in popularity with the original Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast"

Clerk 2 "Soul Calibur started on Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2 sir...."

Me: (starting to get visibly miffed) "No, the original was a launch title.. it made the Dreamcast a smash hit on it's release. Where do you think the game came from on XBLA???"

Clerk 2: (puts arms up in the air) "Look, I'm not into fighting games, ok?"

Me: "Then why are you fighting me as to what games are for what systems? I just played Soul Calibur and Marvel VS Capcom 2 on my Dreamcast last night. If you don't know what you're talking about, why are you fighting me on this?"

Clerk 2: "Look man, I don't have a Dreamcast, ok? It was way too expensive at launch. I got the PS2 instead, as it had the better games... LIKE MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2:

Me: "Well it's 15 bucks now(!), go buy one and try the games. And do you think Crazy Taxi was a PS2 exclusive too?"

(I start up to leave since the transaction on the card machine finally clears)

(I start to walk out the door...)

Clerk 1: (calling another Gamestop) "Hey yea, was Marvel VS Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast?"

(I open the door, walking out...)

Clerk 1: "Yea, I didn't think so.. some guy just came in here trying to sa (door closes).

In short. Fuck Gamestop, and Fuck the ignorant assholes who work there who think they know what they're talking about. I didn't want to fight about anything. If he had no idea what games are for what system, he shouldn't challenge people's knowledge and should just ring up my game, nod his head, and leave me the hell alone.

UGHHHHHH!

Ah ha ha... sounds like the employees were pretty clueless about their videogame history, but carrying on an argument on that level is just way too much effort for me. I would tend to just let 'em think they're right and go home. I'm just way too used to not having too many associates in real life who can follow what I'm saying if I start up a conversation about, say, Dune II, or whatever.

On the other hand, the people who work at the EB Games in my neighborhood are very well versed in their video game history, and are always friendly and talkative when I go shopping (or when I don't, they're genuinely nice people).

You could have brought up Garou.

They were 16-18 years old, right? That means they would have been 7-9 when the Dreamcast was actually a going concern.

And that's what I'm used to. I'm used to having some small talk while completing my trasaction. So this just totally threw me off guard. And I guess I just felt like "Uh, wtf.. this is elementary level stuff, how could they not know this?" that I kept trying to defend it.

Do my defense though, the guy is the one who started getting bitchy at me. It's one thing to think something and be wrong about it, but don't try to preach it as if it's truth, ya know?

Haha, they'd have no idea what I was talking about if I did ;)

Actually, that's the kicker. Have you seen the movie Fanboys? Clerk 1 looked like the fat trekkie guy who came in the comic shop with "Garfunkel". Seriously, almost a direct clone. So he had to be nearing 25-27. The other guy was probably around 30. So it wasn't even the typical 18 year old punk who thinks Playstation 1 games are "classics". :P

Ugh, that's awful. Sounds just like typical Gamestop too. The one near my house is usually full these types of clerks. I used to drive to an EB Games a few towns over just because the staff was nicer.

Take your DC versions of MVC2 and SC to the store and show them to the GS retards. Hell, one better, bring a DC in with you with the games so they can see them in action and be humiliated as they should be.

I went to Gamestop after work today

Ok you lost me.

You could have avoided this nonsense by not going to Gamestop and you know this and if you do go, DON'T BITCH because you have no-one to blame but yourself. :D

Seriously, when I do do go to Gamestop, it's to cash in my $25 giftcards I get free for taking online surveys, and I rarely talk to the employees, because the few times I have were crazy talk!

So who else is selling the retail box with the download code? I do NOT want to go to GameStop for it after reading this.

I've forgotten more about games then most GS employees will EVER know.

One thing I used to hate, though, is when customers would come into the game store I worked in and they knew absolutely everything there was to know about games...which is to say they knew nothing at all and would spew mouth diarrhea everywhere till I got sick of it and motioned one of my employees to call me away so I wouldn't explode. Seriously, there was this one fucking idiot, I wanted to throttle him, said he just LOVED his copy of Zelda for his Atari 7800. I'd just smile and say shit like "Oh, I never got to get that one. Should grab it on ebay sometime." Ugh.

I agree about taking the actual games back to the store, though. Hell, take a copy of Resident Evil CV and show them that it came out on the DC first, too!

It's funny how he said it wasn't on the Dreamcast even though you said that you've actually got it for the Dreamcast, I mean, did he think you were lying or something?

In the future, just avoid the small talk. On the rare occasions that I go to GameStop (usually when they have their 'buy 2 get 1 free' sale) I just pick out my games, go to the counter, check the disks when they fetch 'em, pay, thank them, and walk out. You know, very Soup Nazi-like. No muss, no fuss.

I thought about whipping out my iPhone and showing him a picture of the game case, but at that point, I just wanted to get the hell out of there, ya know?

It was just one of those situations where I was seriously thinking "Is this some sort of joke?". I mean, that's like going into a fashion store and the worker there has no idea what the new pieces are that just came in. That's their job to be knowledgeable. And like I said before, these guys looked old enough to at least grow up on the NES, if not the 2600.. so they really had no excuse.

HAHA. Yea, I guess that was my mistake.

However, to be fair, I have been going to my local Play 'n Trade instead recently, which I like quite a bit (though they have no selection). I called them up first actually, and they didn't even know what the hell I was talking about. I called Gamestop, and they had it in stock.. so that's why I went.

I have bent my back backwards so to not give Gamestop money. I waited 5 days after release for Blaz Blue to get it from Play N Trade, just because I didn't want to go to Gamestop and give them my money. However, this game I really wanted... like now, and I guess, stupidly, it was worth the torture for it.

Well sir, if it wasn't for the fact you had a cool avatar, I might have had to beat you :D :P

No but seriously, some Gamestop employees, like you, actually know what they're talking about, and that's awesome. Unfortunately, they're few and far between. :ponder:

Before I moved to this new city, I did the same thing. I went out of my way to go to the EB by driving 10 minutes out of my way, just not to go to the closer Gamestop.

However, this Gamestop, that's near my work, has got to be the worst one ever. I have never gone in there and left smiling. It should be nuked.

So is GameStop the only place that has it? I even checked the Capcom online store, no dice.

Only place I could find... which is why I went there :( . Sometimes you just have no choice when cool gear comes out that only the evil empire seems to stock.

It seems to have come down in price from what it used to be. Lately it's going in the $30 price range on eBay. It used to be you couldn't find it for under $40

Hey Daytona, which GameStop location did you go to?

Chris

It's the one in Columbus, Ohio at zip code 43228. According to the website, it's Gamestop #767.

I think it would be mildly amusing if people started calling the store (

(614) 272-6607

).
