Pac Hack Fever!

I have always been a fan of Pac-Man since I first played the arcade machine back in '81 and even played the 2600 version to pieces back when it came out for the Atari.

Lately I have been playing around with the "Three Good Pac Man" games and am enjoying them all.

 

Pac Man Arcade is a cool hack of Ms. Pac Man and plays great the only problem I have with it are the monsters are wrong with Inky being the fastest ghost in this hack. Otherwise I love it and play it all the time.

 

Hack 'Em while a hack of Pesco is REALLY a "Hack Brew" and an excellent version of Pac Man for the 2600 complete with intermissions and the big screw up on level 256 just like the arcade.

 

Pac Man 4k (Debro Pac Man) is a HOMEBREW version of Pac Man in 4k that is really well done. It flickers a bit more than the two hacks but the gameplay is great and TOUGH For some reason I find this to be the most difficult version of them all and the monsters are more dangerous. I think this version may actually be more difficult than the arcade original.

 

 

I know I left off the 1999 version of Pac-Man made by Ebivision but I have never played it and as far as I know the ROM is not available anywhere for download.

What is everyone elses thoughts on these games? I am particularly interested on your take of Debro Pac and it's difficulty when compared to the others and Pac in general.

On the 2600, Debro's 'brew is the only game that is remotely faithful to the arcade. All of the others have none of the trademark sprite behaviours...so none of them are mimicking the most important thing. I cheated a little to simulate just two of them (i.e. the hiding spots above and below the center box)...which are coded "exceptions" in the hack instead of a product of those behaviors.

 

If you are talking cross-platform, Opcode's Pac-Man Collection is tops. Nothing else comes close (aside from stuff like MAME running the actual arcade ROMs).

 

Most difficult would be Ebivision's Pac-Man (Pesco is second). Although only 1 opponent seeks the player...with the others moving randomly confined to specific areas of the board...the player-controlled character gets progressively slower in successive levels (in the final one, it barely moves at all). The only thing that makes it winnable is the fact that the "chaser" sprite is forced to try to match vertical position first...so the AI isn't particularly difficult to outwit, provided you have the speed/distance to do so.

Imagine if Debro Pac-Man were 8k rather then 4k!

Now THAT would be something to see but I know his whole purpose of doing it in 4k was to show how good the game could have been made in as little space as possible.

Don't forget Nukey Shay's own Pac-Man 8k. That's my favorite. It retains the maze of the original VCS version, but it ramps it up with much better game play, colors, and intermissions.

Yeah that IS a good 'un and I played it some today.

My personal pics are Pac Man Arcade and Debro Pac.....I LOVE the gameplay of Debro Pac but the monsters are sorta hard for me to see and I have a hard time avoiding them. If it were 8k it would be perfect. I know Pac Arcade isn't arcade perfect by any means but it has nice quality sprites that are easy to look at like Ms Pac does.

it's a testament to the greatness of the man of pac that there are so many different takes on him by so many talented people. For the longest time, Alien was my favorite 2600 pacman game now there are so many it makes my head hurt

Said it before, will say it again...I wish someone would hack the Atari 2600 Pac-Man and make a crappy Ms. Pac-Man out of it -- basically, the Pac-Man Arcade approach in reverse. I think it'd be amusing.
