I don't think I have the patience to beat Super Mario World (SNES) anymore

Recommended Posts

A save system for SMB3 is overkill. The whole game only takes about 4 hours to beat without warping and beating (almost) every level (it was a grind, but I was going for a high score :ponder:) - and with all the avoidable levels, warps, shortcuts, level-skipping clouds, etc., even a code system (like Metroid) would have been overkill.

In 1988 it wasn't worth the extra...$10? $5? to add a battery save to any game that took less than 15-20 hours to beat.

Wow...ok, I would like to know what games your playing that do restart you exactly where you died (that would kinda be suicidal I think, but that could just be me) I mean, All the mario games, Sonic Games, Metal slug, Bubsy....pretty much anything I can think of, you die,you either start the level over, or from the last checkpoint you got.

If you mean, your dying to death and loosing all the levels you beat, eh...once you get to the first ghost house, you can return at any time and save there, it's probably the easiest level in the whole game (short of Yoshi's house and the first ghost house secret, where you literally can not die)

Another thing, Yoshi's your friend, if you have him with you, any block you hit that would produce an egg, will instead produce a 1up shroom. Just go back to the first world (if you haven't unlocked the first ghost house secret) and play through 1-1 several times, I think you get about 8 lives in that one level. Just Run right, and hold the grab button, as soon as you hit the first empty shell, jump and let go and you get a oneup, if you have yoshi, you also get one immediately after the platform with the koopas in the yoshi block.

In order to unlock the first ghost house secret, you need a cape, run right, then turn around and fly up to the top of the screen, run across the top of the blocks, there are four question blocks with oneup mushrooms in them once you get all the way to the right and fall down (break the blocks one at a time, apparently the engine isn't set up to allow more than one or two mushrooms at once) go through the door and break the tape. A level will open directly above the ghost house with five blocks, one yoshi block, two fire blocks, and two feather blocks (unless your small, those are mushroomms then) Your not limited to coming back and you can get Yoshi and then retunr for a mushroom each time after that.

This is one of my favorite all time games, and IMO is the best Super Mario game. That you don't like it for something that was (and still is as far as I'm aware) a common practice in most any game like it I've ever played is kinda weird. Eh, but to each they own I guess. Not saying there aren't some hard levels, those star and secret levels are real sunsofbitches, but other than a few levels sprinkled through the game, most aren't just outrageously hard IMO.

15 to 20 hours is a long time to sit there and play the same game. It is a lot nicer to be able to save your progress, turn the machine off, and come back to it later. Super Metroid (SNES) has a save function, and that's about an 8 or 9 hour game the first time through, and the game even encourages you to try for a sub 3 hour completion time.

Pretty much all side-scrolling "beat 'em up" type games start you where you last died (e.g., arcade Double Dragon). Pretty much all vertical scrolling shooters start you where you last died (e.g., arcade Ikari Warriors, Commando, Heavy Barrel). There are probably thousands of games out there that start you where you last died.

I dunno... I find I have tons of patience for games like SMW, Bionic Commando, and even old RPGs. What I can't find the time for anymore are the modern games. I love the Rainbow Six titles, but I haven't played them very much because I know how much work it takes to get good. I also tried KOTOR... for about 15 minutes. Then I said to myself, "Self, this is a badass game, but there's no way I'm going to be able to make enough time to really enjoy it." Then I went back to playing Tetris, SMB, and Link's Crossbow Training.

Just trying to be honest with myself, not bashing the games.

Well, yeah. So Zelda and Zelda II had saves, so did the Dragon Warrior series and Final Fantasy. Metroid had a code.

But SMB3, a sub-5 hour game didn't. Neither did Contra, or SMB, SMB2, Ninja Gaiden, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gradius, etc.

The NES and the 16-bit systems (Genny, SNES) were right in the middle of the transition away from the primacy of arcade games, where the ideal game was flashy, easy to pick up and play, and lasted less than 30 minutes at the most. It took a while for game designers, as a group, to figure out the best way to handle player deaths.

And c'mon, you pick on SMW and SMB3, but virtually every modern FPS has checkpoints so you end up repeating small sections when you die.

Dang it's been awhile since I've played Super Mario 2...From what I remember, I liked the last levels, Wart's Castle. I LOVE the ending to SMB 2 ,and don't understand why people complain about it. I thought that plot about 'it was all a dream' was very clever and cute.

Sure it was a copy of a Japanese game, sure it seemed not like the others but imo Super Mario 2 was the best.

When I first played Super Mario Bros 3 I was actually very disappointed. Can't choose the Princess anymore!?:( Luigi's back to being a 2nd player character?? What happened to Wart??? The screen colors seemed a bit dull too. Although I do love the little bonus games of part 3...

Super Mario World was a big improvement from part 3 though. I like Yoshi. Makes me want to find a copy of the game and see if it's really that hard. I just remember thinking it was boring when I did play it.

For me, SMW is a little dull when set next to SMB2 or 3, and its really not all that hard unless your wanted the beat the star road or special world levels, then those are a pretty good challenge.

Haha, also loved the mini games of SMB3, I remember me and my sister fighting over who got to get them, especially in water world where you get to take the boat to them.

Yeah, I was kind of late to the game with the SNES Mario games, but I have to say, I'll take any NES Mario game over any SNES one. I just never got as into them as I did any of the original 3. lush_girl, I too love SMB2. I don't care that it's just Doki Doki Panic with Mario skins, the gameplay is fresh and fun, and I rarely tire of playing any of the levels (well maybe the Ice world). I do wish that there was some follow-up with Wart...

Doesn't add Super Mario Allstars a save function to SMB 1-3? I think I remember something like that...

Sure does, that was the first time I actually beat SMB3 also, and it was because I could save and come back later. I love how people have this "kids got all the time in the world" attitude, but I certainly didn't have several "hours" to sit around playing video games (and I'm willing to bet, most of you didn't either) In a way, I have more time now to play games than I did as a kid, cause I no longer have parents hovering over me telling me to go outside, get active, get skin cancer, do something  granted, I don't have as much "free time" over all, but I got more control over what I do with it.
