Game Core September 12th 2009 Oaks Pa NEW ATARI GAME RELEASE

well I guess my 2 cents...

I thought the show turned out pretty well for Pauls first show! I can't beat him down since no one else is trying to do anything else for the local gamers in the area? Paul did help out Chuck a good bit on the past Toomanygame shows as well. Yeah there will be some bugs that will need to be worked out and yeah the speakers were a bit loud. But whatever $10.00 to be with fellow gamers and tons of games is priceles? And yup I drove 90 minutes to the show. + the rain and getting lost didn't help. The GPS had no idea where the hell Oaks Pa even was? But on the other hand other people had it worse.. Some drove from NY,Maryland,Ohio and parts of south Jersey..

I think my only real problem with the show were alot of the vendors? I was a vendor and a costomer. I brought $800.00 to spend on games and what ever I sold I would respend if needed too. I bought one game? Everything was soooo freaking high. My feelings are as long as the costomers have to go through the above B.S. to get to a show to face high prices alot of people just won't even bother anymore. I've been at all the local shows since the very first Phillyclassic show back in the day. And every show I spent $1,000 to $1,500 in the first hour of the show.. so much to buy at great prices. Now everyone wants to make a 1000% profit on everything? Save it for Ebay... I really hope to see it go back to that again...

sorry to yap so much.. But needed to vent on the last part ;)

cheers

Matt

Well I guess I should chime in here. First off let me say all shows have there hitches and this was my first show and had a better turn out than most first shows I have seen. I think me and my team did a damn good job with this event and I am very proud of my team. If we had more people I would have been 100% thrilled with the event. Now I just need to talk to the convention center get them listed on other map sites besides google and in GPS's along with some more advertising and I think the next show will be great.

Now to address some issues people had.

1. loudspeaker volume and rapidness of announcements. At every TMG event Chuck and I ever did all we heard was I cant hear you, The PA isnt loud enough etc etc. So this year I made sure we had a good PA system and now its to loud. So we need a happy medium. I think next year the announcement booth will be in the free play area. I think Chickybaby was correct when saying we were doing to much hence why we had announcements every 5 mins. I will work on fixing it for the next show.

2. No classic tournaments. Well there was a Kaboom high score tournament that ran all day but one of the main points of the day was to celebrate the dreamcasts birthday so half our tournaments were focused on that system. In the future like TMG events in the past we will try and have tournaments on one of each major system from the past (Atari, NES, Genesis, SNES, and maybe some Jaguar or 3do or Vectrex as thats one of my personal favorite systems.

3. The price of the Shield Shifter cartridge is in no way Game Core's say just like at TMG last time we had no say in how many copies of Prehistoric Times actually made it to the show. I think 23.00 for a new game is fair and I personally think Shield Shifter was a great game.

All that being said I want to thank those of you who came for coming and especially thank Chickybaby and Atarinut for being vendors at Game Core. If anyone has any ideas for Game Core to make it better or would like to help out with the next event we are all ears. This is a fan event and I want to keep it going. We are looking at Spring of next year for our next event and are going to take some of your ideas into account and try and lower prices along with a 5 or 6 and under free (good idea it just didnt cross our mind). Like I said if you wanna contact me my email is paul@gamecorecon.com.

Without your support we cant grow into what the greatest show I have ever been to (PC5) was.

Figured I would add my 2 cents !

I made the trip in from Eastern Long Island , about 3 1/2 hours , with my Wife and Son.

I for one thought it was great. As soon as you walked in , there was plenty of 2600 stuff to look thru both to the left and right.....and that's why (at least for me) I came. Sure it was loud , but look I am "THE OLD GUY" and I was able to survive it ! I picked up a copy of Shield Shifter , as well as several other loose carts I needed . I had a good time rummaging thru the boxes of carts , that to me is the fun part ! As for price , we ALL get or have gotten things cheap and at other times paid too much , its what we want at any given time. I bargained a little , even told someone forget your list , I have a list (too old to remember all these damn names)....just as big , so lets just deal ! I had fun looking around and so did my wife and son. , of course there will always be things we don't care about , but If every booth was just 2600 stuff , I would still be there looking !......I'm just glad there was no MAX AGE LIMIT to keep me out !!!!

Oh yea , and since it was my Birthday , my family bought me all my NEW TREASURES !

The Old Guy :P :) ;)

Well, that worked out nicely, eh? : ]

The vendor right inside the door on the left is Collectors Cards and Games. I bought a ton of stuff from him @ TMG in Leesport and again he had the best spread of classic games at the show. I emailed him several days before Gamecore asking if he could bring Vectrex and C64 carts which he did. He was the only vendor there that had Vectrex and C64 and his spread is always fun to pick through.

It's fun to pick up some terrible, el cheapo 2600 carts to flesh out the collection which I was able to do given the small dent in the want list.

Yep,

Bought some from him also and I agree , He did have a great selection. Although I have smaller collections of some of the other old systems , I kept it to 2600 stuff since we were also heading to a Casino to make a DEPOSIT  later in the day.

@#$%%^^%$#@#$#@ing Casino !!!!

Actualy , didn't do all that bad.

Had a Great Birthday.

Happy to be in my late thirties .....Two Decades Late that is ;)

I played that Shield Shitter Shifter game up front...

Basically, it's like the last stage in Phoenix (2600 version without the birds) - you are blasting away through three layers of blocks to kill the thug who's moving left to right at the top of the screen and he's p00ping white missiles on you.

I killed the alien l00king guy at the top of the screen and then you rinse and repeat. It's repetitive and I walked away after the first stage.

How much were they asking for the cart?

$23. just the cart, not even an instruction sheet.i just bought it to have it. i've gotta say that the prehistoric times cart from the tmg con this spring is easily a better game.

as much as i enjoy going to these, theyre not totally my cup of tea. i don't care about anime so knock out half the vendors. i don't care about nes, and was dismayed that i saw alot of modern stuff.

the constant announcements and loud music HAS to go, its way too loud for a small area. i want to hear myself think and be able to actually hear the vendors.

i drove 90 minutes and was only there for like 30. i made a round or 2, decided i wanted a jag, found one and i was done.

i think i prefered the tmg show. it was smaller but the vendors had more room.

Shield Shifter Documentation can be found here: Good Deal Games Shield Shifter Document Link

At a casual glance you might assume that the game is repetitive but your ship actually moves closer and closer to the alien shields as you advance through the levels making it more and more difficult. The two player mode allows you and a friend to play the alien and ship against each other!

In case you can't tell I'm the author of this game and I'm glad to hear all feedback - even negative feedback. I just wanted to point out that the game is a little deeper than you might pick up on without the documentation.

It was a fun program to write when the challenge was to keep it under 4K - with only 26 variables to work with I managed to pull off enemy AI, 2 types of enemy weapons, changing level difficulty, a player with a laser and 96 separate moving shield peaces. :)

I apologize for the harsh feedback - it could have been more constructive.

I appreciate the efforts of the home brew developers and I hope you are encouraged to write additional titles in the future.

Nice game Neuronic. :) I played the demo up front. It's kind of a neat Breakout/Space Invaders mix. If I would've had the extra cash I prob would have bought one.

Also @ TMGPaul - Any chance you'll be having Game Core in Oaks again next year?

Apology accepted :) - No hard feelings, I've been writing video games since the late 80's and have grown a pretty thick skin. Prior to this feedback my best resource was my 8 year old son! :D - my other game StripOff (it was inspired by an old arcade game RipOff - yeah I know the title can leave a different impression) will be released in cartridge form this October. Out of the 4 Atari 2600 games I've made (so far) it's my favorite. Would you believe that I bought my first Atari 2600 last week just so I could see the actual cartridge run on the real hardware! Lately I've been playing with Vectrex development, It's far cry from coding for more modern PC and XBOX games using Direct3D but it is a fun challenge. Now that I have a real Atari I've made a dozen cartridge purchases on ebay - there is something good to be said for the real thing over emulation. I'd be curious to know if anyone thinks a specific game is a must have (I'm more interested in game play over collection value)? I just showed my son how to find Warren Robinette' secret room in Adventure, he is probably the only kid in his generation to even care! :D

Hey Neuronic. My favorite atari games are Kaboom and Spider Droid. Both are fairly cheap.

@16-bit I think we will be doing something in the spring.

Thanks for the spiderdroid tip it reminds me of the 80's arcade game Qix!

I just found this video review of Shield Shifter from the Gamecore show floor. This poor guy was constantly interrupted by the announcer! This touches on a point earlier in the thread about him comming on every few minutes with an extremely loud speaker system!

Shield Shifter Video Review

The poor reviewer could barely get a word in between announcements. I give him credit for trying to cope with the noise.

i reread my post and realized i came off like more of a dick than i intended. since the show i've spent more time with the game and i genuinely enjoy it. the lingering bombs always throw my timing off lol, i underestimate how long they hang around.

i do appreciate your effort and i'm always happy to support homebrew authors. i genuinely hope you'll have another project for sale at a future event.
