FlightSuit #1 Posted September 1, 2009 (edited) I found myself in Dublin, California yesterday with some time to kill, and happened upon a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant. I didn't know these things still existed. Sadly, they didn't have any classic coin-ops. On the bright side, every single arcade machine in the joint required just one 25 cent token to play. None of this 50 cents or a dollar-per-credit nonsense. Due to the lack of classic games and the prevalence of rug rats crawling all over the place, I wouldn't exactly say that this restaurant's arcade is worth making a special trip, but their policy that no machine will ever require more than one token is truly commendable. Name any other good or service that costs the same today as what it cost in 1982. Adjusted for inflation, the price has actually gone down! Chuck E. They destroy them. The one near me had a mint, i mean freaking mint, original Asteroids cabinet. One day I went to go play it and it was gone. I asked who they sold it to and the manager told me they had it taken away to be destroyed. Not sold to a private collector who would take care of such a historic machine. Destroyed with a sledgehammer.
DaytonaUSA #3 Posted September 1, 2009 Well that pretty much ruined the mojo of this thread haha.
FlightSuit #4 Posted September 1, 2009 My God, why would they do that? Is it just cheaper and easier for them to junk it than to find a buyer? How horrible.

Video #6 Posted September 1, 2009 I don't know...maybe their supposed to do that, but I got a feeling the vast majority wouldn't (in fact, it wouldn't surprise me if some employee got the things . There's a problem with them trying to keep dave and busters from getting it...first, and most obvious, ChuckKCheese, is aimed at kids spacifically, while DnB is aimed at adults spacifically. FlightSuit #7 Posted September 2, 2009 I've never even heard of "Dave & Busters." Perhaps they don't have a presence in Northern California.

Animan #9 Posted September 2, 2009 I've never even heard of "Dave & Busters." Perhaps they don't have a presence in Northern California. It's an arcade/bar (the bar is separated from the games). They have classic games, though. Recently, Gameworks took out all there classic games, except Frogger and Xevious. The machines included Pac-Man, DK, and Q-Bert! All of them had this special cabinet that was shorter than regular machines, and had a built in round seat. Next time I go there, i'll ask what happened to those machines. Now the arcade has like a jillion shoot em ups, tons of racing games, and other crap. They also recently added Guitar Hero Arcade. It's pretty much GH3, but in arcade form. The guitars are heavier than 100 Colecovision AC adapters... OK, i'm going off topic. Anyway, My local Chuck E. Cheese has that Ms.Pac Man/Galaga cabinet, and that the only classic game machine they have (if you count those machines as classic).

I wouldn't expect any classic gaming goodness at any CEC, it's for the small kid set. I do like going with my 5 year old when we get a chance. He likes a bunch of the rides and I don't mind the football toss, basketball toss, and skeeball games.
BigO #11 Posted September 2, 2009 (edited) There's a Chuck E. Cheese half a mile from me (it used to be a Showbiz Pizza), in the same parking lot as the gym, bank and grocery store that I frequent. I've driven/walked/ridden by it 10,000 times but never have set foot inside. Might be because I don't have kids. FlightSuit #12 Posted September 2, 2009 Modern arcade coin-ops are kind of disappointing to me. Part of it is the fact that they seem to have inferior graphics to what I experience any time I play a demo game on a PS3 or Xbox 360 at Target or Toys R Us. Furthermore, there's a real lack of innovation or creativity. The only thing to separate a driving/fighting/shooting game that came out a few years ago from one that came out ten or fifteen years ago is that it'll have marginally better graphics. I don't hate modern games like some of you seem to, but if I'm going to pump quarters into anything, I'd prefer it be a true classic that's low-tech, rather than an uninspired knock-off that happens to run on better hardware. AJ_Maine_Man #13 Posted September 2, 2009 CEC is also great for checking out the Hot mommy's and they almost always end up bending over to help there little ones so you either get a nice boob shot or a tramp stamp shot from behind. God bless CEC plus you can go there and not even buy the food so its a cheap place to kill time with your kids on a rainy day.
Crazy Climber #14 Posted September 2, 2009 Yeah, Chuck e cheese pretty much sucks these days but our kids will probably remember it as the best thing ever, just like our parents have found memories of EM pinball/arcade machines. It is something new for every generation but I still think the 80's were the best!
cvga #15 Posted September 2, 2009 Our Chuck E Cheese has a Space Invaders/Qix machine. Although there's not much in the way of classics, you can get good deals on tokens which makes each game less than a quarter to play.
lushgirl_80 #16 Posted September 4, 2009 Last time I've been there was a several years back when I had to babysit for my friend's kids. I was'nt very impressed with the cleanliness and the pizza's always terrible :ponder:CHuck E Cheese is'nt the place to go for a good pizza, salad bar was so-so.. But the kids love it. I remember back in the 80's tho the coolest Chuck E Cheese was the one in Redwood City,CA cos it had 2 floors of all retro arcade games. Last time I played Zoo Keeper was there. WHen I was little tho I always got scared of Chuck E Cheese lol...A grownup in a scary looking rat costume was pretty crazy back then lol.
FlightSuit #17 Posted September 4, 2009 I never saw anybody at a Check E Cheese actually dressed like the guy. That's pretty weird. Redwood City, of course, also has Malibu Grand Prix. I haven't been there in many years, but I do recall there being quite a few coin-ops. Anybody have any recent experience of the place? I'll go back if the pickins are good. Cheese isn't really an arcade, it's a pizza place for kids under 10. Dave and Busters is a place to get drunk and play video games.

That was back in the '80s when Chuck E Cheese employees wore the character costumes like all Disneyland style. I even remember the one in Redwood City had those robotic puppets that would turn on and sing every ten minutes..I used to hangout at Malibu Grand Prix in my high school days. Loved the Miniature Golf lol. Dave and Busters is okay......never liked some of the vibes in that place actually. Been to the one in Milpitas a couple of times....they've got more prize type games than actual classic games tho. Skeeball lol.
FlightSuit #20 Posted September 8, 2009 Dave and Busters? Hmmm. Is Milpitas the closest one to the SF Bay Area? It kinda sounds like the type of place I'd habitually avoid, but I suppose it might be better than a normal type of bar.
cvga #21 Posted September 8, 2009 Our Chuck E. Cheese still has the robotic band and an actual Chuck E that will sometimes come out and mingle with the kids (especially during weekends when they're doing lots of birthday parties).

I have not heard of that place in years! I remember going to one we had near us back in Kentucky where i grew up at and it was the first time i had ever played Cliffhanger. Awesome game and a fun place to play some great arcade games back then.

Had to avoid many drunk guys trying to grope me lol, was'nt fun. D&B is'nt all that..it's connected to the Great Mall. There was'nt any classic games at all, maybe one or two recent arcade games like DDR and some racing game. Most of the games are prize games . Don't use quarters there either cos they give you a special type card that you put credits on. So my review of Dave and Busters lol. Our Chuck E. Cheese still has the robotic band and an actual Chuck E that will sometimes come out and mingle with the kids (especially during weekends when they're doing lots of birthday parties). That Chuck E is rather creepy....the robotic band is kinda funny for the first 5 minutes but then you feel like to pull the plug on it.
FlightSuit #25 Posted September 9, 2009 Dave and Buster's sounds disgusting! Next time I find a bunch of quarters burning a hole in my pocket, I'm heading for the Musee Mecanique in San Francisco.
