I don't understand these two Japanese controllers...

There's this one, the "Super Controller II", which is awfully awesome looking. But what is the little screen actually for?

 

And then there's this one, the "Super Shooting Watch", which I'm not sure is a controller at all... maybe it's just a clock shaped like an SFC controller?

 

I really should have taken Japanese in college instead of Spanish... would help so much with understanding funky cool game stuff.

The Super Shooting Watch is a neat toy, you basically guessed the gist of it. I don't know exactly about this particular version, but I bet it has the same features as the original. The original works as a clock, a stopwatch, and most notably as a tester to see how many times you can tap a button within 10 seconds.
