Connecting 360 directly to PC for Internet Sharing

Recommended Posts

At the moment I'm not on Xbox Live as I can't connect the console to the new router. No wireless adapter as previously I didn't need one - the router was on my desk. Unfortunately in the new house the router is in the living room and too far away to cable up to the Xbox.

However, the Xbox is sitting close to my PC, which does have a wireless connection. I've been doing some reading and it should be possible to connect the 360 to the PC for internet sharing. However, it seems I need a crossover ethernet cable. I've a few ethernet cables here but how do I tell if any are crossover cables?

The colors on the pins won't match up. So hold both ends together and look at what colors go to each pin on the network cable. If they 'match'(as in pin 1 on each is the same color, pin 2 is the same color, etc.) then it's a patch cable. If some are reversed, it's a crossover. Most likely all of yours are patch cables, though, not crossover.

You're probably right. I have to make a small online order for a couple of cheap parts so I'll add a crossover cable to it. £2 is a lot less than £50 for a Microsoft wireless adapter.:o

Yeah but it's a total kludge :P And you'll have to have your PC on to use xbox live..

But you're right, £2 is much better than £50 :) I can't imagine myself ever buying the microsoft wireless adapter either. I'd probably buy this, and configure it as a wireless network bridge running dd-wrt custom firmware if there was no way I could run a network cable there.

No crossover cable needed for the 360. It autodetects what type you have and adjusts for it...... Nice....... :D

I have a similar setup (wireless PC) where I hook my Xbox up to it (and occasionally the 360) and for the most part it works pretty well. Although I have found that I have to turn on the PC first and then the xbox for it to work right. Sometimes putting the PC in standby and turning of the Xbox and taking the PC out of standby would do the trick too.

Anyways I had to bind a couple of the drivers together first for the ICS to work properly.

Yes I was going to say I had it hooked up like this when I first got my 360 and I just remembered using a straight through cable, but that was so long ago I wasn't 100% sure.

Getting the connection sharing exactly right on the PC will be the biggest problem.

After doing it a couple times it's not bad, just have to know what to set and some of the online sites are wrong.

(set up connection sharing, a network bridge, add the Ethernet port to the bridge, fix the IP address, manually config xbox settings...)

I was doing this with my laptop and it works just fine once you get the settings right.

I finally got sick of having to set the laptop up for a connections so I just purchased a D-Link DAP-1522.

It cost me about the same as what the 360 wireless adapter costs and I can hook up 4 devices with it or use it as an access point.

After getting the 1522 connected to the WiFi I just plugged in the 360 and set the 360 network settings to auto.

Haven't had any trouble with the 1522 but the bright blinking lights might annoy you at night.

I guess that's what tape is for. :D

Now I can network my 360, BluRay player, PS2 and HTPC with one box.

Oh, and it supports Dual Band N WiFi.
