+save2600 #4 Posted September 9, 2009 Not the best (Saturn trumps it ) but certainly worthy of a happy birthday . I'll be playing Project Justice or Fighting Vipers 2 tonight in commemoration . When I had my Dreamcast, I remember reading about an underground emulation scene for it. Is the DC fast enough and has anyone come up with a Saturn emulator for it? If so, I guess that would make the DC the "best" console. lol I liked both systems - a lot. Too bad Sega decided to jump ship. But with the way they handled and prematurely killed ALL of their systems starting with the 32X (and maybe the SegaCD) and beyond (why they practiced Atari's business MO is beyond me), I guess the writing was on the wall for them. I hope they decide to inject some real personality back into home console gaming someday. PS3, XBox and the Wii... blech!!
OldSchoolGamer88 #5 Posted September 9, 2009 HAPPY BIRTHDAY DREAMCAST!! To my favorite and last true hardcore gamers console. I am having a DC gaming marathon here today...nothing but Dreamcast gaming from 7am-12am. This day only comes once. I never got a DC on 9.9.99, but I got my first on Dec. 25th of 1999. Still my favorite console since its release. some parting words.. To be this good it takes AGES To be this good it takes SEGA Sega Dreamcast...its thinking. +Cafeman #6 Posted September 9, 2009 I got up early to stand in line for my new Dreamcast 2 today, 9-9-09. Been enjoying NFL2k10 (wow! the run game is hard though), Espio Adventure (I keep falling thru the floors though), and Overland Thunder (loads are too long but its spectacular!). goatdan #7 Posted September 9, 2009 In honor of the Dreamcast's 10th birthday, we announced our first new game in years at the GOAT Store today. Irides is sort of a cross between Lumines and Tengen Tetris, but with power ups too. It's really quite a fun game, and it will be out by the end of the year! We announced pre-ordering is available today, and that includes a copy of the iPhone version of the game! If you're interested, check out the official site at http://www.iridesgame.com/ or pre-order at the GOAT Store at http://www.goatstore.com/ Also, if you appreciate this sort of release, please tell everyone who you can think of who may be interested in it! We have some other games in the pipeline, but we need to get as much support as possible to ensure they become a reality! Thanks, and happy birthday Dreamcast! +kisrael #8 Posted September 9, 2009 How are people celebrating? I went over a few old games, but mostly focused on my beloved Bangai-O. (I wish I could get more into the DS version -- I think it will always be hampered by not having either a second D-pad or 4 smartly arranged directional buttons)
CGQuarterly #9 Posted September 9, 2009 Wow, 10 years already. The first time I ever played the Dreamcast, I was at my friend's house for a get-together, and someone else brought the newly-released console over with them and set it up in one of the bedrooms. I was pretty negative about the DC because I was really into the Playstation at the time. One of the games I played quite often on the PSX was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, which just happened to be the game that the guy had running on the DC. I was mightily impressed by how much better the game looked on the Dreamcast compared to the Playstation. Had I been able to afford it, I would have bought a Dreamcast after that night, but I had to stick with my Playstation for a while longer. I ended up buying my DC at Best Buy for $129.99 bundled with the Sega Smash Pack in the spring of 2002. I think that if I had known about the VGA adapter for the DC, I would have bought one sooner. Hey Dan, two questions about Iridies. Is it VGA/RGB compatible, and is $21.90 the final price? Chris
DaytonaUSA #10 Posted September 9, 2009 The first time I played a DC was when I was on my way to Japan. A couple of my friends had one in their hotel room. They had two games, and arguably two of the best games... Marvel VS Capcom 2 and Jet Grind Radio. I still remember looking at the backgrounds in MvsC2 and thinking to myself "Oh my God, that clocktower looks like real life". When I got there, the buzz was all about the PS2 though and the upcoming (in two months) Gamecube release. I remember playing Mr. Mosquito at a game store kiosk and thinking it was pretty funky, and Ace Combat there as well on the PS2 and being blown away by it's graphics. Stupidly, I decided to bypass the DC when I was there and get the original GBA. That was... dumb. I got a Dreamcast from Funkoland when they were starting to die out, after I had owned my Gamecube and PS2 for some time and was getting bored of them. I remember my hall mates coming to my dorm room and drooling at the screen, then asking what PS2 game I was playing.. only for me to point at my DC's glowing orange On light and smiling. Great system. I really love it. It got me through the horrible Halo craze. Nothing like drowning out 30 rooms of that horrible game's music with "I wanna take you for a ride!" . Giltygear #11 Posted September 9, 2009 10 years, still working like i just took it out of the box. still have that box, too:thumbsup: Weve been through a lot together: college, evil women, good women, booze, emulation, storage, moving, smoking habits, drinking, fighting, shooting, working (shenmue), and the like. met a lot of really good freinds because of that system - both online AND off. long live the swirl! Video #12 Posted September 9, 2009 Wow, has it been that long already? I was one of those that had already been burned many times by Sega's practices....so I did NOT buy it on release. I just said "eh, it'll blow out for $50 or less a year from now, why waist money on it?" Well, I was wrong, I picked min up about 2 years later for $30 Anyhow, neat system and all, and a few really awesome games (most of which were ported to other systems) Never liked the controller, which was dumbed down from the at that point standard (of having at least two sticks and 8 action buttons) Anyhow, but enough about that, I definitely got my money out of the thing, and know it was killed off to early, but eh, that was a given from Sega's own track record. Still, would have been interesting to see what would have come later had Sega...you know...thought.
Rev. Rob #13 Posted September 9, 2009 To me, Dreamcast will always be like one of those first loves. Lots of fun, great sex, but she just moved away when the relationship was getting serious. Once in a while she comes back to town to visit family, and you get relive it all over again. But as time goes on, those visits grow shorter, and more time passes between them. The memories, though, they'll always be brightened by those moments of firsts; the first meeting, the first night together, the first online multiplayer game. shadow460 #17 Posted September 10, 2009 Hydro Thunder!! Er, wait... Happy Birthday!! That's better. My first experience with the Dreamcast was at Lynnhaven Mall a few weeks before the release. My first wife and I watched the demo tapes rolling, and then a no wheels racing game showed up. It was Hydro Thunder. We asked the clerk what he knew about it, and he said that Aladdin's Castle upstairs had the game. We shopped around, then hit the 'cade. I don't know how long we played Hydro Thunder. I think we blew about $40 on it, though, and had a whole slew of fun. Later on I traded a large part of my game collection off to pay for the Dreamcast. I picked mine up at about 1PM on launch day. It is the last time I will ever pick up a console on launch day. Not that it's a bad system, but it's just too much of a hassle. Anyway, that went with the first wife, and I got another DC in late 2002 at Babbage's. I traded off her Arctic Thunder game to help pay the $40 for it. I ran that one for a long time until about two years ago I found one of the original DC units at a thrift shop for $3. It still works, and gets played, even today. That said, though, my Saturn gets more play time than the DC and my "Genesis" combined.
MagitekAngel #18 Posted September 10, 2009 Dreamcast kicked ass. Alas, I was the only kid I knew that had one, so I lived a frustrating existence; the only one that knew the real truth about the world. I talked a few people into coming downstairs for Power Stone 2, but for the most part my time with the Dreamcast was an isolated experience.
16-bit #19 Posted September 10, 2009 (edited) I know I'm a day late, but Happy B-day DC! I have a lot of good Dreamcast memories too. It will always be one of my favorites. Shannon #20 Posted September 10, 2009 Yep the Dreamcast was really the first console to renew my interest in consoles and to gain my attention in regard to 3d games, although the hardware was not quite (framerate issues) up to task it sure looked better than that fish eyed look of PS1 games. Actually purchased one around release time, even had a bad Sonic Adventure.
Prodos8 #21 Posted September 10, 2009 (edited) Happy 10th b-day Dreamcast! I sort of re-kindled my interest in video games with this system. When it went away I focused on the older classic systems from my childhood. Edited September 10, 2009 by Prodos8

vrocko #24 Posted September 10, 2009 Happy Birthday Dreamcast! I still have my original DC hooked up, the one I bought on release day, and played my favorite game last night Rush: 2049! I still love to play my DC and have plenty of games for it. I hope the homebrew scene never goes away! There will always be good memories of my DC and I hope I can make many more. Thanks Sega for a great system. Dreamcast...WAY ahead of it's time. Rich
Shannon #25 Posted September 10, 2009 Although it is not mentioned much the Dreamcast was pretty much the first console to have some decent emulators. Of course the Xbox and Wii have surpassed it by now. But on the dreamcast it could be done without opening the machine, or hacking it. All it takes is a properly burned disc!
