Tower of Druaga.. another WTF game.

Recommended Posts

What's the point of Tower of Druaga? Why was it popular in Japan? You slowly walk around in a maze killing things with a crappy sword, looking for the exit. What's the point?

Yeah, I never really understood the appeal of the game either. It was too hard and if you didn't get certain items early on you were totally screwed later in the game. And there was no clue within the game on how to make the treasures appear. A mind-numbing 60 levels of this b.s. What a waste of time. Go mow the lawn or something instead.

Heh. I should start a whole "WTF" games column

Good idea! A lot of them would be from Japan.. lol

And 90% of those would be Mah Jong.. lol

Uh ...

Actually, it kind of sucks.

You said it!

I first heard of it, and some other craptastic Japanese games from the Playstation Namco Museum series. Dragon Buster, Tower Of Druaga, Grobda, etc. They all sucked hard.

And those wacky Japanese also like their porn anime-style Mahjong games.. o__O not to mention tentacle-rape hentai.. (double o__O)

I've played it in MAME and I really wanted to like it. I could never figure out the "game" though. I later learned online about the hidden things. I suppose they make the game slightly more interesting. But as you say, it must be a cultural thing. I don't get it.

Disagree.

I found this on one of the Playstation Namco Classics discs and got hooked for quite some time. So did one of my kids. The game is indeed too hard but it can be learned.

There are many strategies to learn. First you must learn when to strike at a blob and when to wait a moment. When the sword is held out, the shield is held on your one side, so it helps immensely to memorize which direction to point to be able to also block throw lightnings. It takes a while to get used to - if a wizard strikes from the right side, I think you point UP (when the sword is held out) and the shield is then blocking incoming fire from the right side. Else, if the sword is not held out, you just face the incoming fire and block from the front. But the point is, when the game gets fast, you don't have time to keep drawing the sword out- you have to leave it out and learn to block or avoid.

You must get the speed shoes in the 2nd level or the game is too hard afterwards. The treasure chests seem to appear by killing blobs or moving to a certain part of the screen of each maze, you *can* learn it. You really should get the pick-axe too, and don't abuse it or it'll break. Explanation: you can use the pick 1 time (and I think maybe 2 sometimes) on each maze and it will still be there for the next level. If you use it too many times it'll break. the game gets easier when you can break a wall or two on each maze.

I found a walkthrough... and I have no desire to finish this, I'm sorry. It's insane the crap that happens in later levels.

Yeah, I played it a bit more through MAME and found the secrets to making the treasures appear and what-not. It still didn't make the game more interesting to me.. not worth the effort.

I many only have the game on my Namco Museum Vol 3 PS1 disc but I totally agree what is the point to the game. I have played 2600 games that make more sense.

Never played it before. I just tried it. Can the guy walk any slower? And how useless is the fire button? Slashing away at the bad guys doesn't help, you just have to hold your sword out there like a Viagra victim with a 4 hour erection.

This game SERIES is one of my guilty little pleasures! :D

"Nightmare of Druaga" was actually released in America for PS2, and it's MUCH better than the earlier games! It reminds me a lot of Nethack and other similar rogue-likes. If you play only one game in the series, make it this one. It's actually quite decent.

Trust me, Inky, be glad you're not gonna finish it. I've only beaten it on the Nintendo Famicom, and i came close to throwing the system at my television numerous times as a result because I ran out of continues near the end (especially Floor 59 going up against Druaga himself).

really... i see that game every now and then but figure it sounds more like a tactical RPG then a rogue-like. might be time to pick this up
