moycon #1 Posted September 24, 2009 Interesting.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/08599192533200 A computer scientist at the University of Warwick in England has devised a way to use an Xbox 360 to detect heart defects and help prevent heart attacks. The new tool has the potential to revolutionize the medical industry because it is both faster and cheaper than the computer systems that are currently used by scientists to perform complex heart research. Carle modified a chip in the console so that instead of producing graphics for the game, it now delivers data tracking how electrical signals in the heart move around damaged cardiac cells. This creates a model of the heart that allows doctors to identify heart defects or conditions such as arrhythmia, a disturbance in the normal rhythm of the heart that causes it to pump less effectively "These game consoles aren't just glorified toys. [They] are pieces of very powerful computing hardware," Scarle says. "I can see this ... being most useful for students and early-career scientists to just quickly and cheaply grab that extra bit of computing power they otherwise wouldn't be able to get." 16-bit #3 Posted September 25, 2009 (edited) That's some cool stuff! The Army also uses adapted 360 controllers for two of their UAV aircraft. I remember reading an article long while ago that there was a piece of medical equipment that was manufactured using old Jaguar cases too. **Edit*** Found it. It's piece of dental equipment from Imagin Systems called 'The Hotrod'. I remember reading about it in GamePro or something, but aparently it's old news around here. Lord Thag #4 Posted September 25, 2009 "Maam, the hospital apologizes for the death of your husband. We could have detected his heart problems in time for surgery, had our new Xbox 360 diagnostic machine not red-ringed on us. Unfortunately, it takes several weeks to replace, and Microsoft hasn't sent us the box yet. Microsoft has refused to replace dead people, though they have provided a free discount coupon for the new Halo game. We find killing Brutes to be a healthy way to relieve stress, and promote good circulation"

Old thread from the Jag section Here is the original thread from Jan. 2004. This has come up a number of times. At one point the son of the manufacturer of that equipment was on this forum claiming he could get us some Jag cases in different colors. He didn't come through which is somewhat typical in the Jag community. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/42384-lol-atari-jaguars-used-in-the-dental-field/page__p__509148__hl__imagin__fromsearch__1entry509148
