Videogamecollector123 #1 Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I just didn't think this fit in any of the Atari specific forums. Anyway, I just got done reading Atari force which I have to say is as loosly based on Atari as possible. However the overall story is good and I like the artwork. Has anyone else read the whole series, because it's pretty good.
Gabriel #2 Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I just didn't think this fit in any of the Atari specific forums. Anyway, I just got done reading Atari force which I have to say is as loosly based on Atari as possible. However the overall story is good and I like the artwork. Has anyone else read the whole series, because it's pretty good. Are you talking about Vol 1 or Vol 2? The Vol 1 comics were packed in with various Atari 2600 games, as everyone knows. The Vol 2 comics were a monthly title which was sold through normal comic channels. I don't think I've read all the Vol 1 books. The only carts I had with Atari Force comics included were Defender and Star Raiders. I also had the Star Raiders Graphic Novel which was very similar in style to the later monthy Atari Force. Now, the monthly Atari Force is one I've read every issue of, even the annuals. It was one of my favorite comics even up until the time it was cancelled. My favorite issues were in the 6 to 12 range as the team was confronting the Dark Destroyer. Tempest's fight against DD was a favorite bit. There were also a couple of side stories in the later issues I liked: the multi-parter featuring Packrat as well as Hukka versus THE BOB! I always felt kinda ripped off by the ending. The first twelve issues were great. Then the stories became random and sort of meandered all over the place without direction. Then, as soon as the book seemed like it was gathering some momentum again, or at least heading towards an epic conclusion, it just petered out with the characters literally just walking off the page. Come to think of it, it ended up a lot like Star Brand, another comic I really liked. First few issues awesome, with a climax in about the middle of the run, then random pointless junk until the story was closed off by the characters simply exiting stage left. I blame licensing for Atari Force. I blame that jackass Byrne for Star Brand. Anyway, Atari Force had some really good art for the day. I seem to recall it being hyped a lot as an excellent title too.
shadow460 #3 Posted September 25, 2009 Volume 1 is posted on the main site here. I have read all five books. Excellent read!
Videogamecollector123 #4 Posted September 25, 2009 Well I was talking about the Vol 2 issues as you call them, the full size comics. Yea, the ending in NO. 20 was pretty bland, as though they couldn't just come up with a conclusion. I was expecting, when I took out issues 21 that they would use to tie up the story, but no thats just the backstory of dart and a story about packrat on Scanner 1. But I did like the rest of the comics. I plan on buying the original 5 mini issues, AX almost sold me them but he pretty much demanded I send him the money, and wouldn't even send me pictures of the lot. Retro Rogue #5 Posted September 25, 2009 There was also the Star Raiders graphic novel, which introduced the Vol. 2 team (the team in Volume 1 and Volume 2 were different).
Vic George 2K3 #6 Posted September 25, 2009 I've read the whole series (both of them) and I thought it was good.
Gabriel #7 Posted September 25, 2009 There was also the Star Raiders graphic novel, which introduced the Vol. 2 team (the team in Volume 1 and Volume 2 were different). Nope. Star Raiders introduced an entirely separate set of characters. But, stylistically, they were very similar to the later vol 2 monthly title. Amusing note. There was a panel in the Star Raiders graphic novel where a character was on a soapbox trying to recruit listeners to her cause. Someone at TSR (the makers of D&D) must have liked that panel, because they copied the poses and layout exactly for a art piece in the Complete Fighter's Handbook.
