phaxda #1 Posted September 25, 2009 Well, I got in the mood for a Saturn fix and it's on the fritz. The games load, but only the background parts. For example on the Tennis game I have, I just see the background and not any of the selection screens. When I button through from memory to play an exhibition match, the court and background stuff shows up but not the players! What is up with this? Is my laser shot? I have never had something load halfway like this--usually it just works or it doesn't... Sigh. I was really psyched up for some Saturn action.

Strange man check out my post about my Nes issue, it's crazy how we are both having issues with classic systems
phaxda #3 Posted September 26, 2009 Well my NES always gave me trouble 'til I went toploader. Tried cleaning the laser on the Saturn, still no luck. Background loads, music plays, and that's about it. Well, I got in the mood for a Saturn fix and it's on the fritz. The games load, but only the background parts. Video #4 Posted September 26, 2009 The saturn is up there in "overcomplexity" as much or maybe even more so than the Jaguar....so it could be the chip/s that handle the characture data is shot, while everything else is working fine. Do any other games show this strange behavior? If so, yeah, saturn problem, if not, could be a bad copy of the game (if it used to work, a scatch or bitrot in just the right place may have taken it out)
phaxda #5 Posted September 26, 2009 Oh yeah, it is every game. i have tried 6 so far, about half of those in minty fresh condition. Total bummer.
shadow460 #6 Posted September 26, 2009 I think your console needs repair myself. However, there are a few long shot ideas you could try: How does it perform in the OS? Can you get to the memory manager? If you do have a cart and can get to the memory manager, try backing everything up to the cart, then clear the system memory and maybe even change the battery, then load without the cart and with nothing saved on the system. Oh, yeah, if you have a VCD card installed, try pulling that also. What kind of A/V output are you using?
phaxda #7 Posted September 27, 2009 Hey, thanks for this advice. I don't have a cart. The battery needs to be changed--wrong date when it starts up and all--but that was never a problem before. I don't even know what a VCD card is! I am using the composite connection with a gen-u-ine Sega cable. I guess I am in over my head and should stick to the Dreamcast! shadow460 #8 Posted September 27, 2009 The VCD card would go in the compartment with the battery. That's what the port in there is for.
Video #9 Posted September 28, 2009 VCD's let you watch movies on CD (not very popular in the states IIRC) Yeah, yank the battery and reset the memory, it's a standard CR2032 (I believe) so easy enough to come by. It's a long shot as the poster above said, but if your loosing data anyways, it won't hurt to get a new one anyways. Hope you get it working, if not, let someone in the marketplace have it, there's some smart people here that may be able to fix it, and at the moment, it's not to prohibitive to buy another one if your OK with Ebay or Amazone> Good luck man.
