Rapid fire gadget

Recommended Posts

I found an item with my old atari stuff that I'm unsure what it is or does. It's a rectangular item that plugs into the controller port and a controller plugs into the other end. It says rapid fire on it and that's it. It doesn't seem to do anything when it use it unless its only compatible with certain games. If so which ones? Is this a rare or good find?

It's probably exactly what it says it is. It just acts like your repeatedly tapping the button. But...you gotta remember, many games, especially for the 2600 are set up so rapid fire won't work (space invaders as an example, you can't fire again until the bullet leaves the screen or hits something, or Combat, the bullet fired bounces awhile and you can't fire until it dies) Unfortunately, some games that do allow you to fire as soon as you want to, have weird limits, like only two bullets on the screen at once, so you just shoot a lot, but it doesn't go anywhere

Try Pitfall, I believe if the button is held, Harry jumps, then just stands there, if the auto fire device is working, he should keep jumping. (though I could be remembering wrong)

Plug it in, hold the button down and you will have 'rapid fire'. As mentioned already, not all games will experience a rapid fire, because many require a shot to reach its destination before the next shot can occur. But it still can be convenient, because you can just hold down the fire button continuously for a 'repeat fire' effect, rather than pushing the fire button over and over to fire each shot. Try it with your favorite games....for some games, it's a real 'thumb-saver', for others it really makes no difference.

I have a rapid fire thingy with an adjusting knob and it is awesome for Empire Strikes Back. It's pretty cool watching an AT-AT go down in like 5 seconds. And if you keep shooting at it while it's exploding it will explode twice. I haven't been able to check for sure but I believe you get extra points for that.

I found one of these years ago when I started my retrogaming phase along with a conroller extension cord. I can see the 'Rapid Fire' adaptor right now from where I am sitting and am pondering trying it out tomorrow. :)

Sorry to bump, but I have a genesis controller with a turbo function, so I get the same effect as such a device would provide.

Play Defender with it. Dear God!

Bumping this as I found one of these the other day in a lot I bought (it was in the bottom of the "Storage Center" and I didn't notice until I was wiping it down and something was rattling inside) and took a picture for future reference. I assume this is the device others are talking about, definitely pretty cool. I have never had one before.
