Cassidy Nolen #1 Posted October 17, 2002 I gotta say, I played it on the emulator last night for the first time ever. That was one of my favorite arcades back in the day, but man did the 2600 version ever come through! Unreal, given the systmes limitations, how close they got it to the arcade. What other games does the 2600 do that much justice to/for? Just wondering what you all think. Of course, when I went to make a copy of it, I discovered it was a 16K, probably some hard to duplicate bank switching, so much for an easy ZIF eprom cart! Chris++ #3 Posted October 17, 2002 You must be joking! That's one of the worst 2600 games I've ever played. All of Coleco's games were substandard. They just didn't have the motivation to hire thoroughly knowledgable programmers; they wanted to make the ColecoVision look good by comparison with their shitty VCS titles. Inky #4 Posted October 17, 2002 Actually, Bump n Jump was Sega... What I find scary is that Garry Kitchen of Activision fame programmed 2600 Donkey Kong...
Chris++ #5 Posted October 17, 2002 I meant the company who made the VCS version, rather than the arcade -- but I'm still wrong, because it was M-Network. Oh, well. Not like their games were winners either. CF again

CF since when was bump n jump a coleco made product? ^^; it was one of the Data East arcade games that Mattel got the license for and who made the Inty version and the 'M Network' Atari 2600 version. gavv

Tempest #8 Posted October 17, 2002 Given the 2600's limitations I find the VCS version of Bump n Jump to rather good. The Colecovision version was excellent, and I was never too fond of the Intellivision version (mostly because of the controllers). I wouldn't go knockin' any 2600 until you've tried to program one yourself. Then you'll learn to appreciate even god awful games like those by Panda or Mythicon. Even games like that are beyond my abilities. BTW Bump n Jump was originally by Data East. Tempest
Chris++ #9 Posted October 17, 2002 Well, Tempest ol' buddy, that's like saying "You should like country music because playing the steel lap guitar isn't easy." I still hate country. See my correlation here? I play video games to have fun, not appreciate them at face value as if they're artistic statements. It's easy to knock games if they suck, because....well, they suck. It's immaterial to me whether or not they're hard to program. We're mixing purposes here. There are a few really good 2600 games, and a whooole lot of shitty ones. It's hard to argue with this. NE146 #10 Posted October 17, 2002 Like I always say, 2600 Q-bert.. made pretty darn good practice for the arcade game, which is a rare thing for a port on the good old 2600 (e.g. Stargate, while an excellent port, didn't do anything to help you master the actual arcade game )
liquid_sky #11 Posted October 17, 2002 i think bump and jump is an excellent port myuself... its in my vcs right now actually
Chris++ #12 Posted October 17, 2002 I guess I'm outnumbered on this one, which shocks me -- I always figured this for a loser title across the board. Then again, who am I to offer opinions -- I'm the one who likes E.T..... CF again again
ubersaurus #13 Posted October 17, 2002 I liked 2600 Burgertime, so I guess its a matter of tastes INTV bump n jump rocks, even with the controllers.

Cybergoth #15 Posted October 17, 2002 I still hate country. Phew... even if you hate it, you should at least try Johnny Cash or one of the Hank Williams. Maybe it's just the goth side in me liking songs like "You'll never get out of this world alive", but that's damned cool stuff Uhm... back to the subject, does anyone know, while the C64 version was called "Burning Rubber"? Greetings, Manuel

Big Player #18 Posted October 18, 2002 I just picked up a copy of Bump N' Jump at the Cinciclassic. (Thanks again pitfallaimee!) I really like it--excellent port in my opinion. I not sure why it eluded me for so long.
Inky #19 Posted October 18, 2002 Uhm... back to the subject, does anyone know, while the C64 version was called "Burning Rubber"? Greetings, Manuel I believe the game had the name Bump n Jump in hte States, and Burnin Rubber was the international name. But I could be wrong. And I often am. Chris++ #20 Posted October 18, 2002 Goth -- Yeah, nothin' wrong with '50s country in the Sun Records vein; I was just using country as an illustration, because I hate MOST country. Especially modern country, which sounds mostly like '80s Poison ballads, oddly enough. I tried Bump'n'Jump on the ColecoVision, and I still hate it. It's too jerky and awkward on both consoles. Anyway, my point: I might be down on the VCS port because I don't like the game to begin with. So even a pixel-perfect translation might turn me off. (shrug) Out of fairness and all that, of course. CF again again again again

slapdash #22 Posted October 21, 2002 That was one of my favorite arcades back in the day, but man did the 2600 version ever come through! Unreal, given the systmes limitations, how close they got it to the arcade. You really think so? I have to say that I was exceptionally disappointed with the 2600 version (Bump In Jump is maybe my favorite classic game; it's the only one I ever got really good at). For me, a big part of playing the game is the jumping, and to do well at it, you have to know when to jump. As such, you can identify points that it's safe or not safe to jump from at various speeds. Well, it always seemed to me that on the 2600 version that wasn't consistent at all with the jumping, meaning you couldn't learn the ins and outs of it well enough to get very good at the game. Generally speaking, I can roll the arcade game, but I don't think I could ever roll this version...
dwh #23 Posted October 21, 2002 Once you get sick of smashing cars and jumping cars(if that is possible), you can always try to avoid all the cars and score 50k each round... I have a cart holder next to the VCS of favorite games;it's got this game in it.
StanJr #24 Posted November 30, 2002 I just picked this up today and I am AMAZED out how much this thing is like the NES version. Save for some graphic advancements, the 2600 version is EVERY bit as good! I must say, I LOVE this game! Rock on!
+Kaboomer #25 Posted November 30, 2002 You're not alone there.....bump n' jump for 2600 is pretty "crappy"!
