Possible Problem with my Xbox360

Recommended Posts

I'm on my 4th Xbox360 since launch.... 3 replacements and this new Jasper... and last night I noticed that I may be having yet another problem with my console:

I use either the controller or the button on the console to open the disk drive door. The drive opens up and the power indicator on the console flashes on & off rapidly. Onscreen, the info box constantly reads "OPENING", never does it read OPENED even with the door fully opened. After about 3 to 4 seconds, the drive door closes all by itself and onscreen you get the message READING. I either have to be extremely fast to get a disk out and a new disk in before the drive closes or I have to open the drive and take out the old disk, then re-open the drive to put in the new disk. Other than this drive opening & closing problem, the system works flawlessly.

Has anyone else encountered a problem similar to this? Any ideas on what an easy solution might be (without voiding the warranty), other than send it to MS?

I cant says I've ever heard of anything like that. Does it do the same thing with the face plate removed?

I have seen PC's do that and a used beat up PS2. Drive may be going bad or is bad. (Not the system but the drive itself).

Sadly you may be going on your 5th repair.

Doesn't matter if the face plate is on or off, or whether the system is vertical or horizontal.... sigh.

Yeah, I have a feeling that the drive is screwed up. I'm getting no read errors or freezes, just the drive has suddenly gone "stupid" and doesn't know when the tray is fully opened. I expect at any time the tray will not open at all.

If I was rich, I'd buy an Elite right now (since they are $249 after MS $50 rebate) but I'm not rich and not sure I want to deal with any further system problems. Gaming on the 360 is fantastic and XboxLive is incredible... but the console itself is really the biggest piece of crap I think I've ever owned. Both my launch PS3 and Wii have been totally problem free, but after 4yrs, MS still hasn't figured out how to make a reliable system.

Sigh....

Woah, there's a microsoft rebate for $50? Where do you get it (and how longs' it good for)

My X-box hasn't died yet, but it looks like it may be heading that way....sometimes the power just cuts off, occasionally flashing that red ring thing, I thought it was a loose connection with the power supply (and the supply would simply shut off, then come back on) but now, it looks like it's shutting off as the disc drive is ejecting a lot of times. I go for long stretches with no problems, then all of a sudden, every other time I open the drive, the system shuts off.

Could be a bad power supply, but I don't see those for sell anywhere, and there are I think 3 different versions anyways so....

May be looking at getting a new system, and the black elite console looks cool.

I don't know nuthin' about nuthin' but I just wondered how you close your tray. Do you close it with the button or do you shove the tray? If you shove it, I wonder if that could do some harm since I heard that shoving any disc tray is a bad idea.

Go to the dash and look under the Spotlight tab. You should see a banner for it. It's through Netflix so you'll see their name on the banner as well.

Couldn't agree with you more. Love the system, love playing on XBox Live, love the arcade games, but the system has more bugs then anything.

I bought a Elite when it was brand new, in 2007. About a year later I got the RROD with it and sent it in for repairs to Microsoft. They were pretty quick about it (2 weeks) and I got a free month of XBox live with it. Then about three months ago my apartment was broken into and my system was stolen,a long with my HD, my games, my controllers, and everything else I had for it.

Just last week I finally got the money to buy a new Elite, along with the HDMI cable and the rechargable battery pack and a game...about $400 worth. I got it on Wed. Sat I go to play it and I'm seeing the E 74 error. :x

So I just sent it back to Microsoft for warrenty repairs/replacement today....looks like I'll be on my third one!

Here in holland we now have a xbox360 elite super-pack bundled with Lego Batman and Pure for 249,99 euro. I know that the dollar is now lower then the euro. But a lot of stuff is just priced the same as it would be in the us. Like a apple macbook for 999 dollar would cost 999 euro. So i just count it to be the same value. If i lived in the us i would get the same amount of money as salary only in us dollar. But if i do calculate the dollar into euro, i would be able to buy a elite for 170 euro.

Well, the drive finally failed to open after playing some Wolfenstein. Tried everything I could.... without using physical force.... to at least get my game out but nothing worked. System doesn't even know there is a game in the tray as "My Xbox" shows only the blank box with "Open Drive" words within.

Called MS and when I could understand what the Rep.... either from India or Egypt or wherever..... was saying, I believe MS will fix the system under warranty and they are supposedly sending me a coffin for it.

We'll see....

A quick PISSED OFF follow up.... and rant.

I sent my Xbox360 in for repair of the drive and after 19 days, I got an Xbox360 back from MS repair... not MY Xbox but someone else's Xbox. How do I know? Because the one I received back is yellowed in color (not white), and smells terribly of cigarette smoke!!!

I called MS customer service and complained my head off about the "repaired" console that was returned to me. I also asked about the unreturned Wolfenstein game disk that was stuck in my 360 when I returned it to them (even though it was noted in my service request, I also included a BIG note taped to my Xbox asking for return of the game disk that was stuck inside the tray). After over 30 minutes of being on hold and talking to three different rep's, I was given a Service Order number and was told someone will call me back within three days.

If I send this Xbox back and receive another one, I will now have had SIX consoles since buying my first at launch. And, my son called me last night asking about how my repair went because his four month old Jasper... his 3rd Xbox in two years.... is making a squealing noise, as if a cooling fan is about to expire.

This whole matter of constantly dealing with MS repair really PO's me and I believe I've had enough of MS. Gaming on the Xbox360 and XboxLive is fantastic, but I've decided I'm not investing any more money on any further Xbox products. From here on, I will now only buy PS3 versions of games as my launch 60gb unit has worked flawlessly. And yes, I'll miss out on some great upcoming Xbox exclusives, but I'm tired of dealing with MS and its faulty products.

Sorry for the rant, but after 24 hours, I'm still PO'd about receiving a yellowed and stinking console from repair.

Mendon.........don't let Microsoft win. Make sure they replace your console with one that doesn't reek of nicotine. Then use your console to continue to enjoy the games you have already purchased. Buy the XBox exclusives secondhand from one of the many stores out there. Just don't give them any firsthand money. I am in an almost similar situation. The ending is the same. I am fed up with Microsoft and I will be buying the majority of my games for my PS3. I haven't had any of my XBox's fail on me, but the new update is going to force me to stay off of Live. I hope the programming for the PS3 gets better. I don't want to switch and only get buggy versions of the games.

A follow up....

MS came through for me, and in a very nice way. After spending quite a bit of time on the phone with them on multiple occasions, they ended up shipping over-night a brand new Arcade unit (in the box, still sealed), a check for $60 (for the lost game), and a voucher for three free months of XboxLive. I was also given instructions to return the yellowed & foul smelling console to them in the box that the Arcade console was shipped to me in. Thus, I didn't have to wait to ship the yellow console back to them before they shipped me the Arcade system.

Though I wish it hadn't been such a hassle to deal with customer service, I must say that in the end, MS treated me more than fairly and I am very satisfied with the outcome.

Thank You, MS!

Nice to hear that ms is willing to exchange the console with a brand new one and give you money to buy the lost game.

Must say that they are really trying to keep people satisfied.
