Merrick Bill #1 Posted October 10, 2009 I was using an old PC laptop with DOS software to run APE on my Atari 130XE. The laptop stopped working and so I moved an old Windows 98 PC to my game area and installed the Windows version of APE. My Atari seems to read my PC just fine, but every time I try to write to an ATR file, I get the error message "Write Protected or Bad Sector". I've tried writing to different ATR files with the same result. Does anyone have a clue what might be causing this? I'm using the unregistered version of the software (my DOS version is registered and I'll register this version as soon as I know I can get it working with my system). Merrick Bill #4 Posted October 11, 2009 (edited) Check for locked status of drive: The lock icon is open. I tried clicking and unclicking it but that didn't work. Bill I disabled "Hard Write Protection" in the configuration menu and that seems to have done the trick. However, I don't know what that setting does so I don't know if I've opened up some other problem. There doesn't seem to be a manual for this version of the software. Still looking for any help or guidance from someone familiar with this software. By the way, I went ahead and ordered the Windows version of the software from Atarimax. Bill Well, that only worked one time. Now I'm back where I started from and changing that option no longer seems to work. R.Cade #5 Posted October 11, 2009 (edited) I don't think you can write back to images with the unregistered version normally, can you? It seems like that's a feature of the full version. Edited October 11, 2009 by R.Cade

Bill You should be able to write to it with the unregistered version. The problem could be your ATR file has an attribute flag of READ ONLY. Go to windows explorer and right click the file and then properties and then uncheck READ ONLY. Hope this fixes it.

As I said earlier, I was able to rename a file after I changed a setting in APE but then the problem came back. This is a strange one. I used the DOS version for a long time (until my old laptop stopped working) without a problem. So I'm somewhat familiar with the APE program. And I'm fairly good with Windows stuff. This one is just vry challenging. Bill

Check that you have enought sectors Free to manipulate names. and add files. Check to see that files and disk are not locked or protected. Spartados is bad for locked and hidden files. Which Atari Dos are you useing?

Bill Idont know about the windows version, but the dos version (unregistered) one cannot write at high speed. Have you tried forcing std speed for writes on the atari side? james

Which Atari Dos are you useing? I'm using SpartaDos. The filenames should be okay as I'm using the same ATR files that I used with the old version of APE. I should have plenty of room on my drive to rename files and to add and delete them. The files aren't read only in windows and the file doesn't appear to be locked in APE. Merrick Bill #12 Posted October 18, 2009 Well, the registered software arrived today and it seems to have completely fixed the problem. So I'm back up and running APE and my Atari. Thanks to everyone who had suggestions on what to do. Bill
