Hello,

I recently got a 1040ST with monochrome monitor.

I tried some games, but all complain that they need a color monitor.

Is there a list of games which are working also with a monochrome monitor?

chris

I have tried both Missile Command and Robotron and they both work. If your ST has an RF unit, you can hook it up to a color tv too.

It's here: atari-forum.com, but still some titles like Bolo are missing from it. And of course all that PD stuff - only a fraction of it is listed here atarilegend.com.

Doesn't it support composite video too? (which will not only give a better picture than RF, but also be present in th eabsense of an onboard RF modulator)

Edit: found this http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/123445-atari-st-av-video-cable/ which mentions that the monitor jack only outputs composite on models with the RF modulator as well...

Another one.

Old thread BUMP!

Since I got my ST monochrome-to-VGA cable I've been digging for monochrome games, curious to see what developed in that camp.

Above (post 8 ) tjlazer posted this "Missile Command/Super Breakout" disk image. I wasn't expecting much, but man, this is a pretty fun monochrome disk! I am especially impressed with the "Super Breakout" which appears to be more of an Arkanoid clone, fortunately. I mean, this game was fun, forgetting about monochrome!!! I was just meaning to merely check it out, and I ended up playing for about 1/2 hour.

A belated "thanks" for sharing that.

I had the misfortune of buying a launch-date monochrome ST system. I had read early reviews of the system, which included RF modulator. I pre-paid a reserve at the Atari dealer for the cheapest system I could get, and that was a stretch. I had no idea that monochrome meant locked into one resolution; I assumed it would grayscale the lower resolutions and/or hook to my TV for color.

There certainly weren't fun games like this Arkanoid clone back then, and some of the others you guys have listed. How much less-miserable it would have been!

At least one of the Phantasies, not sure about the others. There's a comment on it on Atarimania. It,s only a certain version of the games.

Tempest

Yes, I followed the link and checked it out. Looks like only the first, original Phantasie does high-rez.

Too bad, I wish all 3 had supported it. Thanks for that link, btw. Very nice list! :)

Monochrome gaming seemed really big in Europe when the ST was still new. I remember the magazine disks from over there had a lot more monochrome games than the American ones. I guess the monochrome monitor must have been more popular over there than the color one. I would start collecting cover disks from the magazines from over there if you want lots of monochrome games.

Yes, monochrome was very popular in Germany because they did some serious stuff with Atari STs - well, more than oversea people :) Color monitor was pretty much expensive, and was no real need for it - people had TVs . So, you may see plenty of German monochrome games, some are monochrome only. But it was similar in France, I guess, since Silmarils made almost all their games with mono support too. And by Atari games support monochrome too in most cases.

Funny thing is that this came out again around 2010 - because there is problem to find monitor working in Atari ST's color modes :-D

And to add some list here: http://atari.8bitchip.info/monocg.html

Necro bump! How about Space Invaders Mono?

Good Invaders clone, with some advantages - like multiple fire possible (normally you need to wait until your last missile (or whatever) hits something or exits screen). But controls are on strange keys, seems buggy - sometimes just wont go left, and work not on higher TOS versions. So, I did some changes in code, and it works now with joystick. Tested with TOS 2.06 too - OK. There is trainer too. It seems that this is only monochrome Invaders for ST.
